When a young person is anxious, frustrated or struggling to regulate their emotions, concentrating on a lesson can become incredibly difficult.
That's where the right support can change things.
Step Teachers is looking for a patient and resilient SEMH Teaching Assistant to work with children and young people in Norwich who need additional support with their social, emotional and mental health needs.
You'll help pupils feel secure, manage difficult moments and gradually develop the confidence and strategies they need to engage more successfully with education.
You'll work alongside teachers and other education professionals, providing individual and small-group support based around each pupil's needs.
Your role may include:
- Providing one-to-one and small-group SEMH support.
- Helping pupils access lessons and learning activities.
- Recognising triggers and early signs of dysregulation.
- Using agreed strategies to support emotional regulation.
- Helping pupils return to learning following difficult moments.
- Supporting positive behaviour and engagement.
- Encouraging communication, confidence and resilience.
- Implementing individual behaviour and support plans.
- Building consistent, professional relationships with pupils.
- Monitoring progress and sharing observations with teaching staff.
- Helping create a calm, structured and inclusive learning environment.
A pupil refusing to work isn't necessarily unwilling to learn.
A young person leaving the classroom may be overwhelmed rather than deliberately disruptive.
Effective SEMH support means becoming curious about what sits behind the behaviour.
You'll need to remain calm when situations become challenging, maintain clear boundaries and understand that progress may happen gradually.
We're particularly interested in candidates who:
- Have experience supporting children or young people with SEMH, SEND or behavioural needs.
- Can build positive relationships while maintaining consistent expectations.
- Have strong communication and behaviour-management skills.
- Are patient, adaptable and emotionally resilient.
- Can work effectively alongside teachers and other professionals.
- Understand the importance of safeguarding and professional boundaries.
Relevant qualifications such as Level 3 Supporting Teaching and Learning, Children's Care, Learning and Development or equivalent would be beneficial.
Experience from education, youth work, mentoring, care or other child-focused settings may also be relevant.
An Enhanced DBS, or willingness to obtain one, will be required.
This is an opportunity to build valuable experience in SEMH, behaviour support and inclusive education while working on a part-time basis.
You'll have the chance to develop your skills alongside experienced education professionals while helping young people build confidence, regulate their emotions and reconnect with learning.
