Summary

We are looking for someone based in Orkney with a passion for community action on climate change, good people and community engagement skills and a degree in community development, renewable energy or other relevant qualification or significant commensurate experience to scope out and drive forward transition projects.

The Island Centre for Net Zero (ICNZ) is one of the key projects within the Islands Growth Deal and will place islands at the forefront of the transition to Net Zero. The ICNZ aims to change our approach to the energy transition and empower our islands to explore and own solutions to decarbonisation.

The ICNZ runs until 31

st March 2028, with a funding stage gate on 31st March 2027.

The Accelerator team is a consortium, with core members based in Orkney from EMEC, Aquatera, CES, and Heriot-Watt, alongside support from the Shetland Islands and Outer Hebrides. The teams focus is on identifying opportunities and needs and gathering

learnings from other aspects of the projects such as the Islands

Community Action Network (ICAN), Transition Labs,

and Demonstration Zones, in order to scope out transition

projects and fundraising for these from a variety of sources.

This will help to grow the scope of the ICNZ over time.

The

overall purpose of this post is to

act on behalf of the community sector within the Islands Centre for Net Zero (ICNZ) Accelerator Team, identifying funding opportunities, securing resources, developing partnerships and horizon scanning in order to support community-led decarbonisation projects across Scotland's islands (Orkney, Shetland and The Outer Hebrides).

The main tasks are:

  • Island Accelerator Development

    • W

      orking in partnership with counterparts from Accelerator team to deliver the objectives of the Island Accelerator Team

    • Participating in regular meetings and providing updates on the work undertaken with the community sector

  • Managing progress towards KPIs and deliverables, raising any issues and coming up with suggestions to overcome these. Please reference the Full Business Case for KPIs and Deliverables: ICNZ FBC V2

  • Ensuring that all data collected and shared within the Island Accelerator is done so in accordance with best practice on data management and GDPR regulations.

  • Community Action Planning

    • Working together with the iCAN Officer to link ICAN members with funding opportunities, including the development of community decarbonisation projects.

    • Collaborating with the iCAN network and wider stakeholders to identify challenges, opportunities and priorities for project development.

    • Contributing guidance, case studies and project development resources to support communities across the islands.

  • Research and identification of emerging project opportunities

    • Information gathering from existing sources to identify previous successful projects in Scotland or abroad that may be suitable for replication in Scottish islands. 

    • Identifying suitable technologies for early stage trials or larger rollouts.

    • Identifying suitable partners required in order to deliver projects.

  • Fundraising

    • Working together with the Accelerator team to develop a funding model and strategy

    • Building a database of funding opportunities that may include grants, private sources and in kind contributions from partners.

    • Supporting community groups with the development of project proposals and funding applications.

    • Working together with the Accelerator team to apply for funding for the continuation and expansion of the ICNZ
