Summary

A Vacancy at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust.

We are seeking to appoint a full time, substantive Consultant with an interest in Lower Limb surgery to work within the directorate of Trauma and Orthopaedics.

We welcome applications from the full spectrum of experience -  those about to complete specialist training to those who have established careers.

Subspeciality interest in hip & knee arthroplasty is required. Experience in management of metastatic bone disease would be advantageous

We expect this person to help deliver and network the Orthopaedic service within Lancashire. This includes:

• Undertaking elective and fracture outpatient clinic

• Elective and trauma operating sessions

• Ward round duties and associated administration

On call duties are 1:8 week of on call shared with a colleague alternating days. All other weeks are based on elective activity and an occasional trauma list. The successful applicant will complement the team of established consultants and wider MDT within the directorate.

The post is subject to the Trust’s terms and conditions of service. The post will have sessions at both Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital and Burnley General Teaching Hospital.

Services are provided from our two main sites, the Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital and Burnley General Teaching Hospital. They are also provided from our community sites at Pendle Community Hospital, Accrington Health Centre, Clitheroe Community Hospital and Rossendale Health Centre.

The Emergency Department at Blackburn is the only ED for East Lancashire and is a Trauma Unit in the Lancashire Trauma Network working closely with the Trauma Centre at the Royal Preston Hospital.  The ED is supported by Urgent Care Centres at Blackburn and Burnley and a Minor Injuries Unit at Accrington.

The department of Orthopaedics provides a general Orthopaedic and acute trauma service to the population of East Lancashire. The trauma service is consultant led with 2 all day trauma lists in the week and one all day at weekends. There is a 1:8 on call week alternating day cover with a colleague.  All the Consultants provide a general Orthopaedic service and in addition they have a sub-specialty interest. There are excellent links with teaching units within the North West region.

Operative facilities are provided in 8 laminar flow theatres across the Trust with 5 at Burnley General Teaching Hospital and 3 at Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital. A comprehensive range of trauma and elective instrumentation is held and regularly updated. Outpatient clinics are based at Burnley General Teaching Hospital and Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital. Peripheral Orthopaedic clinics are held in Rossendale, Pendle, Clitheroe and Accrington.

The post holder will have responsibility for the training and supervision of junior medical staff who work with them. They will devote time to this activity on a regular basis and may be named as a point of contact for educational supervision, appraisal and career advice. The post holder will also be responsible for supervising the education of medical students attached to the department.
