Summary

Yard Operative – Coal Yard

About the Role

We are currently recruiting for a Yard Operative to join a busy coal yard. The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting the day-to-day running of the yard, ensuring materials are handled, stored and loaded safely and efficiently.

This is a physically demanding, hands-on role suited to someone who enjoys working outdoors and is comfortable working in all weather conditions. Previous experience in a yard, warehouse, construction, waste, quarrying or similar environment would be advantageous, although full training can be provided for the right candidate.

Key Responsibilities

Carry out general yard duties to ensure the site is kept safe, clean and organised.

Assist with the loading and unloading of coal and other materials.

Move and distribute materials around the yard safely and efficiently.

Assist with the preparation of customer orders and loads.

Operate machinery and site equipment where trained, authorised and competent to do so.

Carry out regular checks of equipment and report any faults or defects to management.

Maintain safe working practices at all times and follow company procedures.

Ensure correct PPE is worn and maintained.

Keep loading areas, walkways and working areas clear of hazards.

Assist with stock control and maintaining accurate records where required.

Support vehicle movements and loading operations within the yard.

Assist drivers and customers when required.

Report any health, safety, environmental or operational concerns to the Site Manager.

Carry out general housekeeping and maintenance duties around the yard.

Ensure coal and other materials are stored and handled in accordance with company procedures.

Complete any other reasonable duties required to support the smooth running of the yard.

Health & Safety Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be expected to:

Follow all site Health & Safety procedures, Risk Assessments and Method Statements.

Wear the appropriate PPE at all times.

Maintain awareness of moving vehicles, machinery and pedestrians within the yard.

Report hazards, accidents, incidents and near misses promptly.

Follow site traffic management and vehicle safety procedures.

Work safely around coal dust, plant, machinery and heavy vehicles.

Maintain a clean and safe working environment.

Comply with all company environmental and safety policies.

About the Candidate

Essential

Previous experience working in a physically demanding environment.

Good awareness of Health & Safety.

Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.

Physically fit and capable of manual handling.

Reliable, punctual and hardworking.

Able to follow instructions and work effectively as part of a team.

Good communication skills.

Positive attitude and willingness to undertake a variety of yard duties.
