Dairy Herdsperson - Cambridge - £27,000–£31,000 + Accommodation

The Job:

We are recruiting an experienced Dairy Herdsperson to join a professional livestock team within an established commercial dairy enterprise in Cambridge. The farm operates a high performing dairy herd alongside significant youngstock and sheep enterprises and works closely with an educational and clinical training environment.

Key Responsibilities:

- Operate and oversee robotic milking systems, including monitoring performance and carrying out preventative and corrective maintenance

- Monitor animal health and welfare, identifying and responding to issues such as mastitis, lameness and metabolic disorders

- Carry out artificial insemination, including heat detection, straw handling and accurate breeding records

- Manage calving, including recognising signs of calving, providing assistance where required and ensuring appropriate calf care

- Oversee colostrum management and calf rearing, including disbudding and castration in line with farm policy and welfare requirements

- Support feeding operations for approximately 240 dairy cows and 200 youngstock, including adjusting feed mixes and operating feeding machinery

- Manage dry cows, including dietary monitoring and drying off in accordance with herd protocols

- Maintain high standards of animal welfare, biosecurity, health and hygiene

The Company:

An established commercial livestock enterprise with a high performing dairy herd, significant youngstock and sheep operations. The business operates within a professional environment where animal welfare, herd performance, education and clinical training are important aspects of its work.

The Candidate

- Extensive practical experience in modern dairy herd management

- Experience working within a high yielding dairy herd or similarly intensive commercial environment

- Practical experience with robotic milking systems and modern dairy technology

- Good knowledge of dairy herd health, welfare, breeding, fertility and youngstock management

- Experience carrying out artificial insemination and managing herd fertility

- Good understanding of agricultural machinery, feeding systems and general dairy operations

- Awareness of relevant agricultural regulations and assurance requirements

- Confident working alongside veterinary professionals, students and other farm personnel

- Able to work independently, use initiative and make sound practical decisions

- Good IT skills and a methodical approach to record keeping

- S/NVQ Level 3 in Livestock Production (Dairy), or equivalent practical experience

- Full UK driving licence

- Commitment to continued professional development and keeping up to date with developments within the dairy industry

The Package

- Salary £27,000–£31,000 DOE

- Accommodation provided

- Fixed-term contract for an initial 2 years

- Alternate weekend working pattern

- 1 in 4 on call rota

Candidate Requirements
