Summary

Communications Engineer (MOD) (269jc) – Central UK – Home Based with Extensive UK Travel - £40,000–£45,000 + Benefits

The Role

Our client is seeking an experienced Communications Engineer to join their specialist MOD engineering team, supporting the design, installation, commissioning and ongoing support of mission-critical communications systems across the UK defence estate.

DUE TO THE NATURE OF THIS RECRUITMENT CONSULTANCY, WE ARE ONLY ABLE TO REPRESENT INDIVIDUALS WHO ARE EX MILITARY.

Due to the amount of travel involved, our client is particularly looking for candidates based centrally within the UK, ideally with good access to the motorway network and transport hubs. This is not a position tied to one particular office; you will be supporting MOD and customer locations throughout the country.

What We Are Looking For

You should have recognised engineering training or relevant professional/military experience within areas such as:

- Communications engineering

- Telecommunications

- Electronic engineering

- RF engineering

- Military communications or CIS

- Mission-critical communications systems

Practical experience with Land Mobile Radio (LMR) or similar mission-critical communications systems would be particularly relevant.

You should also have experience in some or all of the following:

- Installation and commissioning of professional communications systems.

- RF systems, including **repeaters, antennas, feeders and associated infrastructure**.

- Integration of communications equipment with IP networks.

- Fault diagnosis and technical problem-solving.

- Producing engineering and configuration documentation.

- Testing and acceptance of communications systems.

- Working in operational, field-based or secure environments.

- Dealing professionally with customers and technical stakeholders.

Location & Travel

This is an important element of the position.

As the successful engineer will be covering MOD and customer locations throughout the UK, our client would ideally like the individual to be centrally based within the UK.

Locations across the Midlands and surrounding areas could therefore work particularly well, provided you have straightforward access to major road, rail and transport links.

Candidates need to be comfortable with regular UK travel and spending time away from home when projects require it. There may also be occasional international travel.

The underlying job specification confirms that candidates must hold a full UK driving licence and be willing to travel to customer sites throughout the UK and internationally where required.

We would be particularly interested in hearing from current or former Armed Forces communications and electronics personnel.

If you have worked with tactical or fixed communications, RF equipment, radio networks, secure communications, electronic systems, communications infrastructure or associated networking, your experience could transfer extremely well into this position.

This could be particularly relevant to people who have spent their military careers being deployed to different locations, working independently in the field and supporting equipment across multiple sites, as the civilian role will require a similar willingness to travel and take responsibility for technical delivery.

Security Clearance

Due to the nature of the work, applicants must be eligible to obtain UK Security Clearance (SC) and have the ability to attain a higher level of clearance should the role require it.

Previous experience within MOD, defence, government or another secure operational environment would be highly advantageous.

Desirable Experience

It would be beneficial, although not essential, if you have:

- Previous experience working within MOD, defence, government or another secure environment.

- Knowledge of MOD engineering governance and compliance processes.

- Manufacturer training on professional communications equipment.

- Knowledge of cyber security considerations relating to operational communications.

- Experience with system lifecycle management, upgrades and configuration control.

- Membership of a recognised engineering institution such as the IET.

- An understanding of systems engineering or structured engineering lifecycle principles.

Why Consider This Role?

For somebody leaving the Armed Forces or a veteran who already has commercial experience this represents an opportunity to continue using the technical skills developed during military service without having to start again at the bottom.

You will be working with mission-critical communications technology within a defence environment, where technical competence, attention to detail, accountability, security awareness and the ability to operate independently at different locations are genuinely valued.

For somebody who enjoys being out in the field rather than permanently sitting behind a desk, the nationwide nature of the position should also provide plenty of variety.

Salary: £40,000–£45,000 + Benefits which include:

- Overtime and Nights away paid, circa 5k-10k additional per annum

- Company Vehicle provided for the role. Private use allowed. Company mileage reimbursed

- 21 days annual leave rising to 27 through timed increments with length of service + Bank Holidays

- Salary Sacrifice company health insurance

- 5 hour working week
