Summary

As one of the largest single-site hospitals in the NHS, the Royal London is a major regional provider of emergency services, as a Trauma Centre, hosting the London Air Ambulance and home of the busiest ED in North-East London (NEL). Within our Place, Tower Hamlets, our focus is on our role as an anchor institution, on supporting an integrated urgent care offer with our exceptional primary care, community and mental health colleagues and growing our prevention agenda.

We have just under 7,500 staff (of which you will lead 3,600 nurses within a nursing budget of £240 million), complete around 800,000 outpatient appointments annually, 42,000 day case procedures and 7,800 in-patient surgeries, with a turnover of around £923 million.

Across all our services, our ambition is to deliver consistently safe, compassionate, equitable and person-centred care, with a strong focus on learning, improvement and the experience of our patients, families and staff.  The Director of Nursing and Governance will have a central role in shaping this ambition, providing visible professional leadership and bringing together quality, safety, patient experience, workforce, education, research, digital innovation and improvement across both hospitals. As part of the wider Barts Health Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professions community, the postholder will help us create the conditions in which our people can flourish and every patient receives excellent care.

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Royal London and Mile End Hospitals Hospital Executive Board as our Director of Nursing and Governance within the Barts Health Group.

The role will report directly to the Hospital Chief Executive, with a professional line to the Group Chief Nursing Officer, and you will be accountable for the delivery of the professional nursing, midwifery and Allied Health Professionals agenda at The Royal London and Mile End Hospitals. The role has specific focus on workforce, education, patient and staff experience, clinical effectiveness and patient safety as well as professional practice, research and innovation.

We are looking for a skilled, compassionate and inclusive leader who will provide strong professional leadership across all care settings, encouraging innovation, creativity, and strategic thinking about service provision and staff experience.

The successful candidate will be joining a management team who will support you so that you are able to flourish in the role alongside being a key player in the wider Barts Health NMAHP leadership community. There will be many opportunities for both personal and professional development.

Barts Health is one of the largest NHS trusts in the country, and one of Britain’s leading healthcare providers.

Our vision is to be a high-performing group of NHS hospitals, renowned for excellence and innovation, and providing safe and compassionate care to our patients in east London and beyond. That means being a provider of excellent patient safety, known for delivering consistently high standards of harm-free care and always caring for patients in the right place at the right time. It also means being an outstanding place to work, in which our WeCare values and behaviours are visible to all and guide us in how we work together.

We strive to live by our WeCare values and are committed to promoting inclusion, where every staff member has a sense of belonging. We value our differences and fully advocate, cultivate and support an inclusive working environment.

We particularly welcome applications from Black, Asian and minority ethnic candidates as they are underrepresented within Barts Health at this band.
