This post is offered as a Band 4 Apprentice Respiratory Physiologist position for the duration of the Level 6 Healthcare Science Practitioner Apprenticeship (Respiratory and Sleep Physiology Pathway). Subject to successful completion of the apprenticeship programme, achievement of all required competencies, professional registration requirements and service approval, the post holder will progress to a substantive Band 6 Respiratory Physiologist position.

Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust (BHRUT) is offering an exciting opportunity to join our Respiratory Physiology Team as an Apprentice Respiratory Physiologist.

This is a fantastic opportunity to earn while you learn, combining hands-on clinical experience with a fully supported Level 6 Healthcare Science Practitioner Apprenticeship in Respiratory and Sleep Physiology.

Working within our expanding Respiratory and Community Diagnostic Services, you will develop the knowledge and practical skills needed to become a highly skilled healthcare science professional, supporting the diagnosis and management of patients with respiratory conditions such as asthma and sleep disorders.

Essential Qualifications

Applicants must meet the entry requirements for the Level 6 Healthcare Science Practitioner Apprenticeship and have one of the following:

• GCSE English Language and Mathematics Grade 4/C or above (or equivalent) and

• 112 UCAS points from at least two A Levels including Biology; or

• Equivalent BTEC qualification with relevant Biology modules; or

• a Level 3 Healthcare Science Assistant Apprenticeship.

Apprentice Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for an Apprenticeship youmustmeet the following criteria:

• Be 18 years old or over

• Have the right to work in the UK with a visa that covers the duration of the apprenticeship

• Have been ordinarily resident in the UK for the past 3 years

• Do not hold a qualification at level 6 or above in the same or a similar subject

Apprenticeship Programme Information

• The Level 6 Healthcare Science Practitioner Apprenticeship (Respiratory and Sleep Physiology Pathway) is delivered in partnership with Sheffield Hallam University and is scheduled to commence on 28th September 2026.

• This apprenticeship combines workplace-based learning with academic study, leading to a Level 6 Healthcare Science Practitioner qualification.

• Applicants should carefully consider the apprenticeship start date when applying, particularly if they are currently employed and required to give notice to their current employer. Successful candidates will be expected to be available to commence both their employment and university programme in line with the apprenticeship timetable.

• Further information regarding university attendance requirements, study commitments and programme structure will be provided during the recruitment process.

· To undertake a range of respiratory diagnostic procedures under appropriate supervision and in accordance with departmental protocols, developing competence in:

· Spirometry

· Reversibility Studies

· Static Lung Volumes

· Gas Transfer (Diffusion) Tests

· Fractional Exhaled Nitric Oxide (FeNO) Testing
