Resident Doctor in Oncology

Cromwell Hospital, London, SW5 0TU

Salary: £85,000 a year - full time equivalent

Shift Pattern:

37.5 hours a week

Monday to Friday

The post holder will work Monday to Friday 9am - 5pm on the Oncology Ward with a second RMO

Our oncology centre provides highly innovative treatment for patients with cancer. Through partnership with Genesis Care (our partners in radiotherapy), the post holder will have the opportunity to work with internationally renowned oncologists. A multidisciplinary approach is adopted to ensure best practice and to deliver the best treatment option for the individual patient.

The centre consists of a chemotherapy day unit, radiotherapy department and a 29-bedded inpatient ward (including 2 radioiodine suites) with close links to our palliative care service. We also run an Acute Oncology Service and a Chemotherapy Day Unit.

Our aim is to provide high-quality treatment for cancer patients from the UK and abroad in line with best clinical practice and within a legal framework.

Cromwell Hospital is home to world renowned private Oncologists, based in London, specialising in many tumour types. The post holder will work together with specialist nurses and technicians, and private oncologists as part of a multidisciplinary team approach to patient care. It is essential that the post holder has a good knowledge of dealing with medical emergencies and is able to recognize and escalate complications following Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy and has a low threshold for escalating to the oncology consultant in charge of the patient.

You will be expected to:

• Conduct a daily ward round in collaboration with the nurse in charge, for all patients that have not already been seen by a consultant.

• Complete any jobs at the request of the consultant.

• Be the first point of contact for consultants and nursing staff caring for oncology patients.

• Clerk patients admitted under an oncologist

• Work closely as a team with the other RMOs (cardiology/medicine, surgery and ITU), asking for assistance where necessary.

• Effectively hand-over with Resident Doctors at the end of shift, particularly regarding those patients giving cause for concern.

Experience and Knowledge

Essential

  • Good understanding of both spoken and written English

  • Broad training in all aspects of medicine
  • Ability to manage the acutely unwell and deteriorating patient
  • Ability to recognise the dying patient and administer end of life care
  • Evidence of an interest in research
  • Experience of working with oncology patients

Desirable

  • Experience of working with stem cell transplant patients

Skills and abilities

Essential

  • Analytical skills
  • Sound knowledge, experience and competence in the management of oncology patients including those with haematological malignancy
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Ability to develop personal research projects and exercise initiative
  • Ability to present at conferences and seminars with authority and coherence
  • Attendance at internal seminars clinical audit, mortality and morbidity meetings
  • Excellent written communication skills and the ability to write technical reports clearly and succinctly for publication
  • Ability to demonstrate innovative and original thinking
  • Ability to organise and prioritise work with minimal supervision
  • Ability to meet deadlines

Qualifications

Essential

  • Degree in Medicine MBBS or equivalent
  • Full Registration with GMC
  • Trained in medicine to core medical trainee level or equivalent
  • Up to date ALS certificate
  • Experience of Oncology Services in Independent Sector or NHS services
  • Has achieved or is preparing to take MRCP Part 1

Desirable

  • Other specialist experience e.g. ATLS
  • Experience of prescribing Chemotherapy on an electronic system
  • Database literate with knowledge of statistics
  • Evidence of research publications, awards, posters presentations
  • Full MRCP
