Summary

The Apprentice Coach will work alongside The Barbell Club coaching team while completing funded apprenticeship training through online coursework. The role is designed to develop a confident, knowledgeable and people focused coach who can deliver a high standard of small group resistance training and member care.

One apprentice will be appointed to each location:

  • Durham: Unit 44, Dragonville Industrial Park, Durham, DH1 2XU
  • Sunderland: Unit 25C, Sunderland, SR5 3TX

Applicants should check the location and travel distance before applying, particularly because coaching shifts begin at 5.45am.

The role is 25 hours per week, made up of coaching hours and dedicated study time.

  • Monday: 5.45am to 9.00am and 5.15pm to 7.30pm
  • Tuesday: 5.45am to 9.00am and 5.15pm to 7.30pm
  • Thursday: 5.45am to 9.00am and 5.15pm to 7.30pm
  • Friday: 5.45am to 9.00am and 5.15pm to 7.30pm
  • 3 additional hours per week are allocated to online apprenticeship coursework

This is a split shift role. Applicants must be able to reliably attend both the morning and evening coaching periods.

  • Assist experienced coaches in delivering fully coached small group resistance training sessions.
  • Welcome members and help create a positive, friendly and inclusive training environment.
  • Learn how to coach exercise technique safely and effectively.
  • Support members of different ages, abilities and training backgrounds, including complete beginners and older adults.
  • Learn how to progress exercises, weights, repetitions and training demands appropriately.
  • Help prepare the gym floor and equipment before sessions and maintain a clean, organised coaching environment.
  • Communicate clearly with members and develop strong professional relationships.
  • Support member engagement, confidence, consistency and long term progress.
  • Follow The Barbell Club coaching systems, standards and operating procedures.
  • Attend internal training, feedback and development sessions as required.
  • Complete all required online apprenticeship coursework and assessments within agreed timescales.
  • Act professionally, arrive punctually and represent The Barbell Club positively at all times

The successful apprentice will complete a funded apprenticeship programme with online coursework alongside practical experience inside The Barbell Club. Dedicated study time of 3 hours per week is included within the 25 contracted hours.

The apprentice will also receive practical development from the coaching team, including experience in resistance training, coaching beginners, working with older adults, member communication, session delivery and long term progression.

We are looking for the right person first. Previous coaching experience is not essential.
