Summary

Hazel Tree Education are currently recruiting for a Learning Support Assistant to join a purpose-built specialist school in Wigan, supporting young people aged 11–16 with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.

This is an exciting opportunity for a caring, resilient and enthusiastic individual who wants to make a genuine difference to young people who may have experienced barriers to education.

The setting provides a nurturing, therapeutic and highly personalised approach to learning, with a strong focus on helping pupils feel valued, respected and successful.

The Role

As a Learning Support Assistant, you will work as part of a dedicated team supporting pupils both academically and pastorally.

You will:

Provide one-to-one and small-group support to pupils

Support young people with SEMH and additional learning needs

Help pupils engage with lessons and overcome barriers to learning

Build positive, trusting relationships with pupils

Encourage confidence, resilience and independence

Support positive behaviour through a calm and consistent approach

Help create a safe, supportive and inclusive learning environment

Adapt your approach to meet individual pupils' needs

Work closely with teachers and other professionals to support pupil progress

Support pupils during lessons, social times and wider school activities

Encourage pupils to recognise their strengths and achieve their potential

The School

The school is a specialist provision for pupils aged 11–16 with SEMH needs, alongside additional needs including cognition and learning, communication and interaction, and sensory processing.

The school's approach is centred around nurture, compassion and personalised support, with staff encouraged to meet pupils where they are and provide consistent, positive relationships.

About You

You could be an experienced Teaching Assistant, Learning Support Assistant, Support Worker, Youth Worker or someone with relevant transferable experience.

We are particularly interested in candidates who have experience of:

SEMH

SEND

Challenging behaviour

Alternative Provision

Specialist education

Care or residential settings

Youth work

However, attitude and personality are just as important as experience.

You will need to be patient, calm and consistent, while being able to build genuine relationships with young people who may not always find school easy.
