Summary
The Green Spaces and Street Scene Service is responsible for maintaining and enhancing Calderdale's parks, open spaces, play areas, countryside, woodlands, streets and public realm. Our teams play a vital role in ensuring that residents and visitors can enjoy clean, safe and attractive environments throughout the borough.
We are looking for an experienced and motivated Parks and Green Spaces Senior Operative to join our service and help deliver high-quality grounds maintenance, environmental improvement and public realm services across Calderdale.
As a Senior Operative, you will provide day-to-day supervision and support to a team of operatives, coordinating workloads and ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently and to the required standards. You will be responsible for monitoring resources, undertaking site inspections, carrying out quality checks and ensuring the effective use of vehicles, plant, equipment and materials.
You will undertake and oversee a wide range of activities including grass cutting, strimming, hedge maintenance, planting, weed control, litter collection, emptying bins, play area inspections, tree and woodland maintenance support, fencing repairs, hard landscaping works, environmental improvement projects, winter maintenance duties and emergency response activities.
We are looking for an individual with strong organisational, communication and customer service skills who can lead by example and promote safe working practices. You will have experience working in grounds maintenance, horticulture, environmental maintenance or a similar outdoor environment, together with knowledge of machinery, equipment and health and safety requirements. The ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, residents, volunteers and community groups is essential.
A full UK Category B driving licence is essential, and you must be confident driving manual vehicles and operating a range of grounds maintenance equipment and machinery.
The role is physically demanding and involves regular lifting, carrying, bending and walking. You will work predominantly outdoors in all weather conditions and will be required to participate in the service standby and out-of-hours rota. Flexibility is essential as evening, weekend, bank holiday and emergency response working will be required to meet the needs of the service.
