Summary
The cleaner (reporting to the Clerk to the Parish Council) is responsible for the day-to-day cleaning of the Parish Hall, including meeting rooms, offices, toilets, kitchens and a hall used by the public. The cleaner will also deep clean the building as required, managing their hours and workload to keep the building to a high standard of cleanliness and hygiene, to ensure satisfaction of the facility users. The parameters of the part-time cleaner’s hours are outlined in
the contract of employment, but will vary. The cleaner is an important post with responsibility for COSHH substances, keyholding duties and responsibility for security of the building and site.
The postholder will:
Generally
• Keep clean and sanitary all parts of the Parish Hall, including meeting rooms, offices, toilets, hall, kitchens, corridors, lobbies and entrances
• Work responsibly and safely alone, taking care of their own safety and others’
• Work well in a team, communicating with the office and other site staff
• Attend team meetings, appraisal meetings and reviews regularly
• Manage workload and maintenance schedule to routinely deep clean areas in rotation, and account for additional times spent cleaning mud and water from floors in poor weather
• Work towards improving the Council’s carbon footprint and environmental sustainability by considering and trialling more sustainable and environmentally friendly products, reducing water wastage, and coming up with their own ideas
Health, safety and documentation
• Observe and adhere to all health and safety practices, documentation and procedures related to their area of work
• Understand and observe best practice and essential requirements for COSHH substances including cleaning chemicals and pesticides, which the postholder will handle, store and dispose of safely
• Proactively report to the clerk any hazards, defects or other issues affecting safety and functionality of the building or their equipment
• Be responsible for stock taking cleaning chemicals and consumables, ensuring that ordering is efficient and correct
• Undertake e-learning and in person training on their role, health and safety requirements and anything else reasonable that the Clerk considers beneficial for personal development
• Complete regular documents, logs and record keeping pertaining to areas of cleaning, personal development and HR records, such as timesheets
In the kitchens
• Clean and organise kitchens to a commercial standard, observing safety, allergen awareness and HACCP requirements
• Clean and organise kitchen equipment in cupboards and shelving in line with organisational and environmental health requirements
• Clean (weekly) and defrost fridges and freezers (as required)
• Complete closing checks and remove expired or unwanted foodstuffs from kitchen
• Clean small electrical appliances, such as toaster and coffee machines (as required)
• Clean and degrease oven (quarterly) and microwave (weekly)
• Clean all other kitchen equipment as required
• Clean sinks and maintain flow with drain unblocker/bleach (as required)
• Be able to pull out white goods, such as fridges and freezers, to clean under and around them
• Descale taps, urns, kettles and other places where limescale accumulates (as required)
• Monitor and proactively keep topped up kitchen consumables such as soap, towels and washing up liquid
Throughout the building
• Use heavy cleaning equipment and tools such as carpet cleaners, vacuum cleaners and floor washers
• Sweep and mop hard floors
• Vacuum (daily or weekly, as required) and wet clean carpeted areas (as required)
• Clean skirting boards, window ledges, radiators, picture frames and other wall adornments (weekly or as required)
• Clean doors, security screens and walls, including hardware, touch points and fittings (weekly or as required)
• Dust (monthly) and degrease accessible air vents (6-monthly)
• Clean toilets, urinals, cubicles and associated WC facilities, including baby changing facilities, mirrors, hand dryers etc, ensuring adequate supplies of consumables (daily, or as required)
• Empty general waste, recycling and food bins, ensuring proper disposal of waste (daily or as required)
• Cleaning (daily or as required) and polishing (monthly) tables, chairs, desks and other surfaces
• Clean blinds, chains, fittings and windows (internally) – weekly in the kitchen and others as required
• Organise laundering of towels and washing/changing of mop heads, cleaning cloths and brooms
• Clean and organise storage cupboards in Parish Hall containing Council and cleaning equipment (as required)
• Collect and report to the office team any lost property
Keyholding cover (when required)
• Act as a responsible key holder, ensuring security of the building and site
• Provide occasional cover for other cleaners and key holders, including weekends and evenings
• When providing key holder cover, show clients and hirers the premises on arrival, complete hirer’s paperwork and show them key safety and functionality features
• Be a friendly and positive representative for the Council when dealing with members of the public
• When closing after bookings, secure site including setting the alarms, locking gates, turn off lights, close doors and windows, ensure taps are turned off and that the building is left in good repair
• Any other ad hoc duty as given by the Clerk or Deputy Clerk
