Summary

We have an exciting opportunity for a Specialty Doctor  to join our critical care team.  This post is designed to develop your generic skills building on the competencies gained during Foundation Training.

The Critical Care service in the Trust comprises 16 beds supported by a tier of seven Junior Doctors devoted to critical care. Seven Consultants run a separate critical care on-call rota, covering twenty weekday sessions with resident consultant cover until 10 pm weekdays. There is a well-developed critical care outreach service.

You will benefit from training opportunities equal to colleagues in recognised training posts. You will be mentored and supported in your specialist work by a consultant.

Clinical Responsibilities include:

•Develop enhanced clinical skills, especially in the assessment and management of critical illness and peri-operative medicine;

• Develop competencies required to establish advanced monitoring and to provide organ support (including insertion of central venous catheters, arterial lines, intercostal drains, paracentesis catheters);

• Develop and improve communication skills with patients, relatives and other members of the multi-disciplinary team;

• Develop knowledge of clinical governance;

• Gain a better understanding of the ethical and medicolegal principles surrounding critical illness;

• Improve competencies in using IT systems such as electronic patient records and electronic prescribing;

You will further develop clinical knowledge and skills in Intensive Care Medicine and aid preparation for working as an Intensive Care Consultant or a Consultant in any other specialty of interest of the appointee.

The training opportunities will mirror those given to Specialist Trainees with support from departmental teaching, career development, training budget, Quality Improvement Projects (QIP)  and allocation of a clinical supervisor to support career development.

The Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) King’s Lynn is located near some of the most beautiful scenery in the UK, along the north Norfolk coast, and not far from Sandringham House.

We provide a comprehensive range of specialist, acute, obstetrics and community-based healthcare services to around 331,000 people across west and north Norfolk, in addition to parts of Breckland, Cambridgeshire and South Lincolnshire.

We have more than 4,000 staff and volunteers, approximately 530 beds, and a helipad for air ambulances. We work with neighbouring hospitals for the provision of tertiary services, including as part of regional partnership and network models of care, such as the trauma network.

In February 2022 the significant progress that has been made at QEH was recognised by the Care Quality Commission who rated the Trust as ‘Good’ in all of the core services they inspected. They recommended the Trust moves out of the recovery support system (formerly special measures).

Please see the attached Job Description and Person Specification for further information about this exciting opportunity.
