Summary

Our business is growing, and we’re looking for a skilled Carpenter to join our successful Capital and Planned Works team in Plymouth. You’ll carry out a varied range of carpentry and refurbishment work in customers’ homes across Devon. Experience in fire risk assessment (FRA) work, including fire door installation and fire stopping, would be an advantage, but it is not essential—if you have strong domestic carpentry skills, we’d love to hear from you.

At Ian Williams, honesty, integrity and collaboration shape the way we work. We combine traditional values with innovation and always aim to do the right thing for our customers and our people. With colleagues celebrating 20, 30 and even 40 years’ service, we know that trust, loyalty and long-term opportunity matter.

Competitive basic salary of £40,093 for a 39-hour working week

On target earnings up to £44,149 with bonus, overtime and travel expense

Travel and fare allowance

Uniform and PPE provided

Paid holidays, pension contributions and life insurance

Free legal and financial advice, plus free counselling via Lighthouse Charity

Our tradespeople don’t just join us—they build lasting careers with us. We invest in development, recognise hard work and provide the stability of long-term secured contracts.

The Carpenter role

You’ll work safely and professionally in occupied homes and public buildings, completing high-quality carpentry while keeping customers informed and minimising disruption.

Your key responsibilities

Completing first- and second-fix carpentry, primarily in domestic properties and public environments

Carrying out a range of work, including studwork, door sets, kitchen fitting, roofing and structural carpentry

Supporting fire door installation and fire-stopping work where required; previous FRA experience is welcome but not essential

Delivering excellent customer service by communicating clearly, providing progress updates and treating every home with care and respect

What you’ll bring to the Carpenter role?

NVQ Level 2 in Carpentry, or an equivalent recognised qualification

Proven domestic carpentry or joinery experience, with strong first- and second-fix skills

Kitchen-fitting or FRA experience is desirable but not essential; IFC Installer certification would also be an advantage

A customer-focused approach, pride in your workmanship and a strong commitment to health and safety

A full UK driving licence
