Design Engineer

Wellingborough based company with hybrid working (required to live within a commutable distance of Wellingborough)

Temporary - 6 month contract minimum

Monday to Friday working

Salary £40k + DOE

About the Role

We are very excited to be recruiting for a hands-on Design Engineer to support our Wellingborough based client. As a project design engineer, you will be working on projects across both new product development and existing work. You'll be involved in designing components and assemblies for engine systems that are used within various sectors including commercial vehicles, marine, military & defence and rail producing. You will be conceptual designs and progressing them through to detailed engineering using CREO.

This role suits someone who enjoys creating designs from the ground up, thrives in a practical engineering environment, and can work effectively across multiple projects while collaborating with teams, suppliers and customers worldwide.

Key Responsibilitie

s

  • Develop conceptual and detailed designs for diesel engine systems, fabricated structures, frames and defence-related assemblies.

  • Work on new product development as well as modifications and improvements to existing projects.

  • Produce accurate CAD models, drawings and technical documentation using CREO.

  • Generate and maintain BOMs through Windchill.

  • Collaborate with suppliers, customers and internal teams including commercial, technical, manufacturing and production.

  • Support prototype builds, testing phases and design validation activities.

  • Ensure designs meet relevant defence, automotive and manufacturing standards.

  • Manage and deliver up to three concurrent projects, maintaining strong control over time-lines and deliverables.

  • Act as a project engineer who drives tasks forward

  • Work effectively with colleagues ensuring clear communication and documentation

Experience & Skills Required

  • Strong background as a Design Engineer, ideally with experience designing products from concept through to manufacture.

  • Proficiency in CREO for 3D modelling and detailed design is preferred, however experience with iDEMEA, CATIA, AutoCAD and ANSYS Workbench will also be considered.

  • Experience applying engineering principles to product design, development, product support, testing, or technical problem-solving activities.

  • Experience working in a collaborative, cross-functional environment and contributing to technical project delivery.

  • Experience producing BOMs and working within PLM systems (Windchill preferred).

  • Ability to work across multiple projects and deliver to tight deadlines.

  • Strong communication skills, especially when working with international teams.

  • A practical, hands-on approach with strong problem-solving ability.

Desirable Backgrounds

To be considered for this role the ideal candidate will have experience of working within the following sectors

  • Defence sector experience - highly advantageous.

  • Automotive or heavy vehicle engineering - beneficial.

  • Other backgrounds will be considered where candidates have designed and delivered products from scratch (e.g., machinery, engines, fabricated structures, industrial equipment and construction).

    egree in Engineering or a related technical discipline, or equivalent relevant experience
