Summary

As a Band 6 Developmental Specialist Palliative Care Nurse, you will provide compassionate, patient-centred care across hospital settings, supporting patients and families with complex palliative care needs, symptom management, end-of-life care, and holistic decision-making.

Working within our specialist palliative care team, you will develop your clinical expertise while contributing to the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based care. You will work closely with our multidisciplinary team, including social workers, psychologists, complementary therapy practitioners, and discharge case managers.

This is a developmental role designed to support your progression within specialist palliative care. You will be encouraged to develop your skills in advanced clinical assessment, complex symptom management, communication, care planning, and supporting complex discharges and community care. With appropriate supervision and support, you will develop increasing confidence and autonomy in clinical decision-making and in providing advice to patients, families, and colleagues.

We are looking for a registered nurse with experience in palliative care, whether gained in hospice, community, or acute settings, who is passionate about developing their specialist knowledge and skills. A postgraduate qualification in palliative care, or a willingness to work towards one, would be desirable. You will be compassionate, resilient, reflective, and committed to learning, with the ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.

You will receive structured support, clinical supervision, and opportunities for professional development as you work towards consolidating your specialist palliative care competencies and progressing towards Band 7 level practice. Main responsibilities of the role include:

• Clinical Expertise: Provide advanced clinical care and consultation in managing symptoms, pain, and emotional distress for palliative patients and those nearing the end of their life

• Patient and Family Support: Offer support and guidance to patients and families, helping them navigate the challenges of palliative and end-of-life care, including decision-making and advance care planning

• Education and Training: Develop and deliver educational programs for nursing staff and other healthcare professionals on palliative and end-of-life care practices on the wards and in a classroom setting when required

• Care Coordination: Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams and outside charities and support services to create and implement individualised care plans that align with the patient's wishes and best practices in palliative and end-of-life care

• Advocacy: Advocate for patient rights and ensure that care delivered respects the cultural, spiritual, and personal values of the patient and their family

• Quality Improvement: To be supported in leading initiatives aimed at improving the quality of palliative and end-of-life care services, including the development and implementation of new protocols and care models

• To deliver education based on the 6 Ambitions for palliative and end of life care and the 5 Priorities of care
