The Manual Handling and Ergonomics Trainer plays a crucial role in promoting the safety, occupational health and wellbeing in MKUH. They are responsible for leading manual handling training initiatives, ensuring colleagues are equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to perform manual handling tasks safely and effectively. The Manual Handling and Ergonomics Trainer deliver engaging and informative training, bespoke sessions, conducts training needs analysis, and provides ongoing support to staff to minimise the risk of injuries related to manual handling of patients and loads.

MKUH are seeking to recruit a dedicated Manual Handling and Ergonomics Trainer, to support the Manual Handling and Ergonomics Advisor with the co-ordination, provision and delivery of an effective high quality Manual Handling training service ensuring compliance with the relevant current best practice standards and legislation.

The role requires an enthusiastic, confident trainer with a sound knowledge of patient handling practices and equipment to ensure that MKUH meets its statutory and legal obligation with regards to manual handling practice.

The Manual Handling and Ergonomics Trainer works in the Staff Health & Wellbeing department and oversees and ensures Trust regulatory and good practice compliance so far as is reasonably practicable.

The post holder will act as the Trusts competent person with regard to manual, people handling and ergonomics training. You will, as appropriate, support and deputies for the Trusts Lead Manual Handling and Ergonomics Advisor assisting them to ensure the Trust meets its legal duties in relation to manual handing and ergonomics systems and process through delivery of manual handling and display screen equipment training, policies and procedures. The post holder will be responsible for conducting all training activities related to manual handling, ensuring employees are compliant with statutory/mandatory requirements and that adequate training needs analysis, they will be responsible for the development and implementation of bespoke training solutions and oversee the take-up by staff where mandated for their role.

The post holder is responsible for gathering information and feeding back to the Trust Lead Manual Handling and Ergonomics Advisor and Head of Staff Health & Wellbeing to ensure that policies and procedures evolve and are relevant/appropriate.

Main duties and responsibilities

• To be the Trust’s recognised competent person on matters relating to manual handling and ergonomics (clinical and non-clinical) training, demonstrating a working knowledge of relevant legislation, policies, subject knowledge and professional issues pertinent to the role of working within the limits of own competence.

• To assist and deputise (as appropriate) for the Trust Lead Manual Handling and Ergonomics Advisor on delivery and implementation of policies and procedures in relation to manual handling and ergonomics including the Manual Handling & DSE Policies respectively, ensuring these are up to date with current legislation and practice, periodically reviewed and audited and monitored for effectiveness.

Data Analysis

• Analyse statistical data, interpret and produce regular training reports on departmental activity.

• Through training feedback, identify areas of poor practice (either poor manual handling practice or poor risk assessment completion) and develop bespoke training solutions to target improvement.

Education

• To design training programmes to meet the needs of the workforce adhering to current best practice and evidence base.

• To deliver theory and practical training programmes for all aspects of manual handling operations, which meet the employer’s statutory obligations, and which reflects the level of understanding and learning needs within all staff groups across the Trust.

Clinical / Non-Clinical

• To use professional experience and subject knowledge to advise clinical /non-clinical staff in appropriate techniques for the speciality/department.

• To keep abreast of clinical developments and research that will have implications for safe practice and to regularly attend National Back Exchange or other relevant meetings to maintain awareness of current patient/inanimate manual handling issues and to challenge areas of poor practice.

Management

• To assist in the development and implementation of policies and procedures in accordance with manual handling & DSE legislation, codes of practice and Trust standards.

• To deputise for the Trust Lead Manual Handling and Ergonomics Advisor and as appropriate attend and provide reports which include analytical date to the Health and Safety Committee, Workforce Board, and other relevant committees.

Professional

• The post holder will be the designated competent person for moving and handling and ergonomic training for the Trust.

• Actively seek relevant theoretical knowledge and demonstrate researched based practice.

Communication

• Produce written communication including reports and policy documents, documents.

• Escalate any concerns and issues in relation to manual handling & DSE to the Trust Lead Manual Handling and Ergonomics Advisor.

Core duties

• Support and deputies for the Trust Lead Manual Handling and Ergonomics Advisor.

• Effectively plan and deliver manual handling training courses for all new and existing employees at Milton Keynes University Hospital Trust and liaise with the Lead Manual Handling and Ergonomics Advisor to ensure that compliance is meet in line with legislative requirements.
