Summary
We are offering 12 to 24-month fixed term ST3+ Anaesthesia Fellowships based at the Kent and Canterbury Hospital, East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust. The fellow posts are designed to support development of RCoA Stage 2 (ST4-equivalent) capabilities and strengthen applications for Higher Training pathways.
These posts are development focused, not solely service roles, providing structured opportunities to build a strong portfolio alongside ongoing clinical anaesthetic practice and on-call commitments.
Kent and Canterbury Hospital is a key surgical centre within the Trust, delivering all vascular surgery for the region alongside a broad urological service, including major cancer and robotic procedures, and a dedicated elective orthopaedic programme.
A wide range of day case surgical specialties are supported, including dental and maxillofacial surgery, ENT (including paediatrics), ophthalmology, interventional radiology, MRI, and endoscopy. Emergency theatre cover is provided daily.
Anaesthetic services are delivered across a modern theatre complex comprising:
• 5 main operating theatres
• 2 day-surgery theatres
• 2 endovascular theatres
• 1 ophthalmic theatre
• A 4-theatre elective orthopaedic unit
The surgical pathway is supported by busy specialist pre-assessment clinics.
Critical care services include a 6-bedded Intensive Therapy Unit (ITU) and a 4-bedded High Dependency Unit (HDU).
The post holder will undertake ST3+ level anaesthetic duties, including elective and emergency work, with participation in a 1:8 on‑call rota covering the Intensive Care Unit, with additional responsibility for providing anaesthetic support to emergency surgical activity as required.
Alongside clinical work, the fellow completes a subspecialty fellowship in one chosen area. Duties include providing safe perioperative care, participating in subspecialty activity and MDTs, completing Stage 2 workplace‑based assessments, contributing to QIP/audit/research, supporting teaching, and engaging in governance and service development.
Fellows are supervised by a named Educational Supervisor and subspecialty leads, with all experience mapped to RCoA Stage 2 outcomes. SPA time is provided for project work. These posts suit ST3+ doctors seeking development and portfolio strengthening for Higher Training or CESR.
