Summary

Main Duties 1. Definitive care of patient attendances. 2. Immediate resuscitation of critically ill patients and thereafter referral to the appropriate department of those patients who require admission. 3. Communication and liaison with other departments within the hospital both clinical and managerial. 4. Communication and liaison with agencies outside the hospital including the Emergency Services, GP Surgeries, Urgent Care Centres and Tertiary Trauma Centre. 5. Responsibility for the supervision, training and education of junior medical staff, with and active role in the training of nursing and other staff. 6. The post holder may be named as the educational supervisor of several junior medical staff and supervising the ACPs. 7. Continuing development of the service, using audit, the application of evidence-based medicine, support development of IT infrastructure, mentorship programme and streaming pathway. 8. Dealing with personnel and other managerial issues. 9. Support a culture of learning from excellence as well as learning from mistakes/errors. Paediatric Responsibilities: Role Purpose Provide expert assessment, diagnosis and management of acutely ill and injured infants, children and young people attending the Emergency Department. Deliver consultant-led care, clinical leadership and supervision within the Paediatric Emergency Department (PED). Support service development, governance, quality improvement, teaching and research activities. Main Duties and Responsibilities Clinical Duties Manage children presenting with minor and major illness and trauma. Lead paediatric resuscitations and major trauma responses. Provide senior clinical decision-making and support patient flow through the emergency pathway. Supervise junior medical staff, advanced practitioners and nursing colleagues. Liaise with paediatric, surgical, orthopaedic, intensive care and mental health services. Leadership and Governance Lead quality improvement, clinical audit and patient safety initiatives. Develop and implement clinical guidelines and policies for paediatric emergency care. Contribute to departmental management and strategic planning. Actively participate in safeguarding and child protection work. Education and Training Deliver teaching to undergraduate and postgraduate learners. Provide clinical and educational supervision. Support RCEM and PEM trainee development through workplace assessments and mentoring. Research and Service Development Participate in research and evidence-based practice. Contribute to service innovation and pathway redesign. Qualifications GMC registration with licence to practise. Entry on the GMC Specialist Register for Emergency Medicine (or within 6 months of CCT). Subspecialty accreditation in Paediatric Emergency Medicine or evidence of equivalent competency. Experience Significant experience in paediatric emergency medicine. Experience in paediatric resuscitation and trauma management. Evidence of audit, quality improvement, teaching and leadership. Skills Strong communication and multidisciplinary team-working skills. Ability to work under pressure and make rapid clinical decisions.
