Summary

Applications are invited for a substantive post within Lancashire Teaching Hospitals Trust. Candidates must have full General Medical Council (GMC) registration and be on the Specialist Register of the GMC under Intensive Care Medicine. 

The Critical Care Unit (CrCU) has recently completed a multi-million-pound upgrade and expansion to 34 state-of-art beds on the Royal Preston Site. Theunitis a tertiary centre for several specialties including neurosciences, major trauma, vascular, head and neck and renal.

 Anaesthetic Directorate is ACSA accredited by the Royal College of Anaesthesia and led by a team supporting the perioperative model recommended by the Royal College of Anaesthetists. This comprises a Clinical Director, and 3 Associate Clinical Directors for Workforce, Preoperative Care, Emergency and Elective Services.

The post holder will:

• Specifically adopt, in conjunction with colleagues, an active role in the planning, development and delivery of the critical care services  for the Department.

• Participate in the critical care consultant on-call rota at the Royal Preston and Chorley and South Ribble Hospitals with additional cover during colleagues’ absence.

• Assume a continuous commitment for the care of patients, even if employed less than full-time and ensure, in consultation with colleagues, that adequate arrangements are made for leave and off duty periods.

• Promote high professional standards of clinical care for patients, both through direct patient care and by the maintenance of continuing professional development.

• Exercise the freedom to develop specialist elements of the services to reflect perceived priorities within available resources

• To provide an anaesthetic service as a member of the Department of Anaesthesia.  This will be across both Preston and Chorley sites depending on Directorate service requirements. 

• To undertake pre-operative assessment of patients as appropriate, together with post-operative management and follow-up of patients in appropriate cases. 

•  To undertake weekly theatre sessions as allocated of which a proportion will be delivered flexibly over each week, to maintain the high level of anaesthetic service delivery required by the Trust. These may include evening sessions, or, rarely, a weekend session (by mutual agreement).

Lancashire Teaching Hospitalsprovidesa wide range of general hospital services to around 370,000 people from the Chorley, SouthRibbleand Preston areas. We are one of the largest Critical Care Units in the Northwest of England, admitting over 1600 patients every year. Inadditionwe provide specialist services to approximately 1.5 million people from Lancashire and South Cumbria, and we are a designated Major Trauma Centre.  

The Trust proves coaching services from experiences members of the human resources team, and new consultants areallocateda mentor to ensure a seamless transition into the consultant workforce. 

The Critical Care unit is the base for ‘The Perioperative Firm’ of Medical Students. Up to 36 students a year are based in the unit for 4 weeks a time, spending some time in theatres learning skills, as part of their Heart, Lungs and Blood module of year 3.
