SEN Learning & Development Mentor
Location: Exeter, Devon
Contract: Full-Time | Term-Time Only
A positive relationship with the right adult can make an enormous difference to a young person's experience of education.
A specialist education setting in Exeter is looking for a patient and enthusiastic SEN Learning & Development Mentor to support children and young people with a range of additional needs.
You'll work with pupils who may have Autism, ADHD, SEMH needs, communication difficulties or other barriers to learning, helping them participate in education, develop confidence and become increasingly independent.
This is an opportunity to do meaningful work while developing valuable specialist experience that could support your own future career.
Rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach, you'll learn what works for each individual pupil and adapt your support accordingly.
You'll be involved in:
- Providing one-to-one and small-group support
- Helping pupils engage with lessons and practical activities
- Breaking learning into manageable and achievable steps
- Supporting young people who may struggle with concentration or motivation
- Encouraging positive communication and social interaction
- Helping pupils develop confidence and independence
- Supporting emotional regulation and positive behaviour
- Building consistent and trusting relationships
- Encouraging young people to recognise their own progress
- Supporting activities within and beyond the classroom
- Working closely with teachers and other professionals
Some days will be challenging, but you'll also experience the satisfaction of seeing young people achieve things they may previously have believed were beyond them.
You don't need to arrive as a SEND expert.
You'll work alongside experienced colleagues and develop your knowledge through practical experience, guidance and professional development.
Over time, you'll strengthen your understanding of:
- Autism and neurodiversity

- Social, emotional and mental health needs
- Communication and interaction
- Behaviour support
- Emotional regulation
- Safeguarding and wellbeing
- Individual learning strategies

These are skills that can provide a valuable foundation for a long-term career working with children and young people.
Relevant experience doesn't only come from schools.
You may have developed the qualities needed for this position through care, youth work, mentoring, sports coaching, residential services, community programmes or other support-based roles.
You could also be a graduate looking for practical experience before pursuing further training.
