Summary

To obtain venous or capillary blood samples from children and young people. To label specimen bottles accurately and place samples in appropriately labelled bottles and packaging for transporting to the relevant laboratory. To conduct all procedures with an awareness of the childs individual needs and respecting patient confidentiality. To record appropriately in the patients electronic records in accordance to trust policy. To approach the child with courtesy and give an age appropriate explanation of the procedure. Obtain appropriate consent for the procedure being carried out. Recognise and respond appropriately to an emergency situation. When carrying out assessments document and sign all results and inform trained nurses/clinicians of abnormal results and outcomes of assessments. To be responsible for highlighting and identification of child protection concerns to either the Children's Community Nursing Team Leader and Safeguarding lead at the Hertfordshire Community Trust and action concerns through child protection procedures. Overseeing the stores and ensuring stock levels are maintained. Whilst it is not a legal requirement, Hertfordshire Community NHS Trust encourages and supports all staff to be vaccinated as this remains the best line of defence against COVID-19. Word versions of documents are available if needed to allow for any adaptations to be made i.e. font, colour, background, convert to Read Aloud.
