Summary

The main duties and responsibilities of the post holder are set out below: To work with the Clinical Lead Consultant and wider team to provide an effective & comprehensive EM service, for all patients 24/7, supervise the nurses trainee ANPs and specialists, provide on-site presence & support in case of a major incident, contribute to clinical governance and advise HSC on service planning. The job plan for this post is currently based on a working a 1 in 4 evening/overnight on call and 1 in 4 weekends. The clinical content and practical aspects of these sessions will be determined following appointment. This is subject to annual review by the Medical Director and the Clinical Lead. The emphasis at PEH ED is to provide hands-on consultant based clinical service for all emergencies that attend. Any relevant skills, as contained in the core EM curriculum of the RCEM, would be integral to individual practice. The role is primarily of shop floor clinical service delivery, regular teaching, with limited office based administrative duties. There is a regular need to assess patients referred by GPs to the on call in-patient specialists from the MSG. These patients are sent to the ED for assessment, where the department functions like an MAU/SAU. As the entire hospital is run on consultants, on call manpower is often slim and it is necessary to work with the specialists seamlessly. To maintain unrestricted clinical activity, which is expected by RCEM standards and to keep oneself up to date with a CPD portfolio. To co-ordinate annual leave with Lead Consultant to ensure adequate medical cover. Urgent administrative work in the absence of a colleague will need to be covered by mutual agreement with other medical staff. To take responsibility for the effective supervision and management of other clinical staff where appropriate. To carry out such teaching, examination and accreditation duties as are required and contribute to postgraduate and continuing medical education activity (including nursing and other clinical staff). To actively participate in clinical audit and in continuing medical education to Royal College or other appropriate standards. To contribute to all aspects of clinical governance activity, respond to complaints in a timely manner, address risk management issues and liaise with all necessary administrative or clinical staff, both in and outside of the ED. To provide medical support to the onsite Hyperbaric Chamber. To participate in research wherever appropriate. To contribute to the effective overall management of the EM service. To participate in relevant HSC planning teams, when requested to do so. Where it is agreed between the parties, to undertake work on behalf of the HSC or services provided by the Department for other agencies. This excludes work done under a direct arrangement between an individual Consultant and a third party e.g. Category 2 arrangements) To comply with arrangements for revalidation.
