Summary

An exciting internal opportunity has arisen for a motivated and enthusiastic Neonatal Doctor to join our dynamic team at the Royal Bolton Hospital as a Senior Clinical Fellow (Tier 2/Registrar Equivalent).

Royal Bolton Hospital operates a highly respected, state-of-the-art Level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). As a vital tertiary hub within the Greater Manchester Neonatal Network, our unit features 16 Intensive Care / High Dependency (ITU/HDU) cots and 19 Special Care (SC) cots. This role offers a fantastic opportunity for an internal clinician to gain deep, broad-based experience in advanced neonatal critical care, work with cutting-edge equipment, and step up into a middle-grade leadership framework.

Please note that Clinical Fellows are paid on a local pay scale that mirrors Doctors in Training pay scales. Basic salary offered for this role is fixed at  £67,325 and will not be uplifted beyond that salary point. Where the role requires out of hours working, evening, weekend and on call enhancements will be added according to a work schedule. It is Trust practice that we offer a set salary for this role and variations will not be considered.

NICU Inpatient Management: Conduct daily ward rounds, delivering and implementing comprehensive acute care plans across Intensive, High Dependency, Special, and Transitional Care.

•    Delivery Suite Response: Act as the senior resident medical responder leading resuscitation and immediate stabilization efforts for extremely premature neonates and high-risk deliveries.

•    Tier 1 Clinical Leadership: Directly assist, mentor, and supervise Tier 1 doctors (ST1-2/FY2), and work alongside Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioners (ANNPs).

•    Procedural Autonomy: Competently perform advanced neonatal procedures under regional guidelines, including UVC/UAC line placement, lumbar punctures, and PICC lines.

•    Family Liaison & System Tracking: Maintain compassionate, transparent communication with parents

•    Out-of-Hours & Rota Cover: Complete resident shifts on a fully compliant rolling Tier 2 rota (days, long days, nights) and provide prospective cover for unexpected short-term internal sickness.

We have a long and proud history of caring for generations of local people and can trace our roots all the way back to 1814 with the first hospital in Bolton – the Bolton Dispensary in the town centre.

Bolton NHS Foundation Trust was formed in 2008 and, in 2011, we became an integrated provider with community health services joining the trust. Covering a catchment area that also incorporates parts of Bury, Wigan and Salford, we deliver hospital and community based services from the Royal Bolton Hospital in Farnworth and from 20 health centres across Bolton, to a catchment population of 310,000+ people.

The Royal Bolton Hospital is a major hub within Greater Manchester for women’s and children’s services and is the busiest single ambulance-receiving site in Greater Manchester.  We’re structured in four clinical divisions – Community Services, Families and Diagnostics, Medicine, and Surgery and are led by a Board of Directors. As an NHS Foundation Trust we’re accountable to our members and have a Council of Governors to represent the views of patients, public, staff and partners.

Buildings, names and models of care have changed over the centuries, but one thing has remained constant and is prevalent among our 6,718 staff members: the enduring commitment to providing the best health and care for the people of Bolton.

The Senior Clinical Fellow (Tier 2) is a pivotal middle-grade role. You will provide expert, resident clinical care for highly complex neonates, lead resuscitation efforts on the delivery suite, and actively supervise Tier 1 junior doctors (ST1-2/FY2) and work alongside Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioners (ANNPs).The post allows dedicated Supporting Professional Activity (SPA) time to develop sub-speciality interests.
