The role

Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) is at the forefront of innovation in digital services. We are committed to enhancing our data-driven capabilities to support our Digital Data and Technology (DDaT) strategy. As we continue to grow, we are seeking a talented and dedicated Data Engineer to join our Digital Team on a permanent contract basis.

You will be responsible for leading in and developing of stable, reusable, and scalable data pipeline solutions in line with GMCA's DDaT Strategy. Working with cross-functional teams to implement digital solutions to address data-related issues.

You will be joining an award-winning digital service that is enabling the organisation to be one of the leading Combined Authorities in the country and supporting the reform of public services across Greater Manchester in line with the Greater Manchester Strategy.

The role holder will:

  • Lead the development of stable, reusable, and scalable data pipeline solutions in line with GMCA's DDaT Strategy utilising GMCA's Microsoft Fabric platform.
  • Liaise with suppliers, contractors, and service providers to implement data pipelines from multiple data sources into our dedicated Fabric and SQL platforms.
  • Guide and inform the organization on tools and methods for process automation and data visualization to deliver insights from our data.
  • Administer the security of data and application technologies, ensuring compliance with organizational standards and legislation.
  • Proactively monitor the performance and improvements of the organization’s data ETL processes.
  • Coach and mentor organizational use of data engineering tools, techniques, and processes.
  • Manage and resolve incidents, problems, and requests as logged on the organization’s Service Desk.

About you:

  • Be educated to degree level in a relevant subject or significant demonstrable experience.
  • Understand Data Warehousing and Data Modelling concepts.
  • Understand Relational database concepts.
  • Have experience of using the following:
    • Microsoft SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS).
    • Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS).
    • Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS).
    • Microsoft Visual Studio.
    • Microsoft Power BI.
    • Microsoft Fabric.
  • Have experience of writing and understanding complex Transact SQL queries.
  • Creating user friendly dashboards with SSRS, Power BI and similar tools.
  • Utilising Extract, Transform and Load (ETL) processes to merge multiple data sets into a database (SQL, Azure etc).
  • Microsoft certification in relevant area or commitment to gaining certification at a minimum level of Microsoft Fundamentals.
  • Assist in Business Continuity Planning and Disaster Recovery activities to maintain a stable, available, and secure data landscape.
