Summary

Band 6 Acute Oncology Nurse

Development Post

This is an exciting opportunity for an oncology nurse to join our Acute Oncology team in a development role. The post holder will play a key role in the Acute Oncology Service (AOS) team for the delivery of a comprehensive acute oncology service within the Trust in line with the NICE guidance for acute oncology services and the standards for acute oncology.

The post holder will work alongside the clinical nurse specialists and ACPs to develop their acute oncology skills and knowledge and receive training to do so.

The post holder will be responsible for contributing to the ongoing development of clinical practice, audit and standards of care within the service, including contributing to policies, and guidelines and to service development to ensure patients have a seamless pathway.

The post holder will be required to work with clinical, operational, information and administrative staff across all levels of seniority within the acute Trust.

The successful candidate is required to be able demonstrate the Trust commitments, the responsibilities of the job description and person specification. The post will be based at Barnet Hospital.

Support the Lead Acute Oncology Service (AOS) Nurse to deliver and evaluate the service

Provide AOS CNS support to MDTs across the Royal Free and Barnet hospitals

Work with key members of the MDT to support staff in the delivery of specialised care

Work autonomously to deliver specialist care which is evidence based and which enhances the quality of patient care

Work to scope and seek support and education to extend the role with additional skills

Review patients daily who are admitted to wards and ED

Support ED so patients with suspected neutropenia have antibiotics within the door to needle time

Carry the AOS emergency phone, triage calls and advise accordingly, communicating with the patient’s oncology team when required, and provide follow up.

Contribute to training/education within specialist area to multidisciplinary groups.

Be the key worker for the suspected Cup patient’s coordinate their investigations to ensure a smooth pathway, remaining as their CNS throughout treatment

Ensure that CUP patients have a holistic needs assessment

Act as the MSCC coordinator and ensure that patients with suspected/confirmed MSCC are cared for as per NICE guidance and local policy.

Lead and facilitate audit of AOS, CUP and MSCC through the application of audit and research evidence-based practice

Promote innovation and progression to the continually improve patient care through reviewing the evidence base and embed this in practice through engagement in research
