We are an innovative and passionate team working in a dynamic operating theatre. As a HCSW/TSW at Ely Day Surgery Unit you will be expected to assist the patient through the operative process. From collecting the patient for theatre to assisting the anaesthetic and scrub practitioners care for the patient through surgery.
You will be recruited at Band 2 if you have not yet completed the NHS HCSW induction which includes completion of the Care Certificate and Competencies. Once completed you will move up to Band 3. If you are currently working in a support worker role and have therefore completed these, you will be recruited as Band 3.
The process for functional skills has now changed, this is conducted as a second interview on TRAC following any applicant that is successful at their initial interview. This is organised by recruitment and you must achieve a pass rate of at least 50% to receive a conditional offer. This process applies to anyone that is not currently working as a Support Worker at CUH.
We expect you to carry out several duties including but not limited to
• Take observations such as blood pressure measurements, pulse, urinalysis and temperature.
• Support patients with moving in their clinical area
• Cleaning the theatre between cases
• Helping with stock management and ensuring safety in theatres
• To assist with patient care and other departmental related duties as directed by Registered Theatre Practitioner.
• Admitting patients to ward area on day of surgery
• To assist in reception area from time to time in order to provide AL cover
• Helping with transfer of patients to discharge vehicles
• Helping with ordering of linen for days of operating
• Handling and recording of specimens in ward and theatre setting.
• Be able to work as a team in a variety of specialities

This is an exciting insight into the operating theatre and we encourage personal development whilst you with us. We are able to provide full training for the HCSW/TSW role and beyond, using several education programmes and pathways to help you to progress & develop. We also have a full support and induction programme to help you develop your skills.
There might be occasions where you will be required to work at Addenbrookes Theatres for the needs of the service so you will need to have flexibility to cover varied shifts.

The position does not meet the eligibility requirements for sponsorship and includes a mandatory 12-week training period. CUH provides a comprehensive four-week Clinical Support Staff Induction Programme, together with support to achieve the National Care Certificate. This programme is designed to help you settle into the organisation and become a valued member of the clinical team. Please note that attendance on all four weeks of the induction programme is mandatory.
