Summary

A fantastic opportunity has arisen due to the expansion of the General Surgery Department at Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust.  The department is being expanded as part of a £1.8M investment in the clinical workforce across General Surgery and its sub-specialities.  Included in this review of emergency and elective services;  Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust is able to increase the Speciality Doctor workforce.  The post holder will join as the Specialty Doctor within the Colorectal Department of General Surgery in order to support delivery of the Colorectal National Cancer Targets.  This post will consist of 10 Programmed Activities per week 

1. Care of in-patients: The appointee, with help from junior doctors will be responsible for the day to day care of admitted patients.

2. Out-patient clinics: The appointee will help consultants in the running of out-patient clinics including emergency clinics. He/she will also be expected to run independent clinics as the need arises.

3. Theatre sessions: The appointee will assist consultants in carrying out operations and procedures in the theatre. He/she will also be required to run independent lists as the need arises.

4. Teaching: The appointee is expected to participate in the teaching of juniors and medical students as well as allied professionals.

5. Administrative duties: The appointee will be required to perform administrative duties with respect to patient care and the supervision of juniors as well as other roles which may be assigned from time to time.

6. Flexibility in working: A degree of flexibility in working is expected from the appointee to help cope with the changing needs of the department.

7. To provide prospective cover for colleagues annual and study leave.

Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust provides integrated acute and community Healthcare in the West Midlands serving a population of 260,000 residents. Walsall Manor Hospital houses the full range of district general hospital services. The £170 million development was completed in 2010 and we are continually upgrading. Construction of the new integrated critical care unit was completed in 2018, extension of a Neonatal Unit and an approved plan to build a brand new, state of the art Emergency Department which commenced in 2021

The department is offering a 12 month Fixed Term Contract for Speciality Doctor in Colorectal  Surgery. The successful candidate will support a variety of activities such as:

• Outpatient clinics

• Elective Main theatre and CEPOD Lists

• MDT

• Virtual Clinics

• Routine work will include ward rounds

Objectives of the role include:

To improve the Colorectal site-specific cancer pathway targets and to support delivery of the 28-day faster diagnosis National standards.

To reduce delays incurred by patient’s having to wait for first their first OPD appointment.

To support other organisations within the ICB via mutual aid and give patients access to  equitable of wait times and support Faster Diagnosis across all organisations within the ICB

To create capacity for consultants to see more complex cases within their clinics and MDT Follow up’s – NEW patients unless triaged as requiring Consultant review will have their first appointment as nurse or Speciality Doctor / Registrar led.

To support an increased volume of  patients diagnosed with cancer both pre and post operatively  

As an employee of the Trust, you will work in close co-operation with, and support other clinical, medical professional and managerial colleagues in providing high quality healthcare to the Trust’s patients. Integral to these responsibilities is the following: -

• The provision of a first class clinical service

• Sustaining and developing teaching 

• Undertaking all work in accordance with the Trust’s procedures and operating policies

• Conducting clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Trust’s service plans
