An outstanding opportunity has arisen for an exceptional Director of Public Health & Communities to provide strategic leadership across public health, prevention, community wellbeing and leisure services. This is a pivotal executive leadership role offering the chance to influence policy, drive innovation and improve health outcomes for diverse communities.
This is far more than a traditional Director of Public Health position. It offers the opportunity to lead a broad portfolio that brings together statutory public health responsibilities with community wellbeing, prevention and leisure services, ensuring a truly integrated approach to improving the lives of residents.

The Role
As a member of the Corporate Management Team, you will play a key role in shaping the strategic direction of the organisation while providing influential leadership across local, regional and national partnerships.
Working collaboratively with elected members, senior leaders, NHS partners, voluntary organisations and wider stakeholders, you will champion a place-based approach to prevention, reducing health inequalities and improving outcomes for local communities.
You will:
Provide strategic leadership for Public Health, Community Wellbeing and Leisure Services.
Lead the development and delivery of innovative prevention strategies that improve health and wellbeing.
Influence policy and decision-making across the organisation and wider health and care system.
Drive partnership working to address the wider determinants of health and reduce inequalities.
Promote a neighbourhood-based approach to improving community resilience and wellbeing.
Ensure statutory public health responsibilities are delivered effectively while identifying opportunities for service transformation and innovation.
Contribute to the overall corporate leadership of the organisation, helping shape long-term strategic priorities.
About You
You will be an accomplished senior leader with the credibility, strategic vision and political awareness to operate effectively within a complex local authority and partnership environment.
You will demonstrate:
Significant senior leadership experience within public health or a related setting.
The ability to lead through influence and collaboration across multiple organisations.
Strong experience of partnership working across health, local government and wider stakeholders.
A proven track record of improving population health and reducing inequalities.
Excellent communication, negotiation and stakeholder management skills.
The ability to navigate complex political environments while maintaining a clear focus on improving outcomes for residents.
A passion for prevention, innovation and delivering lasting improvements to community wellbeing.
Essential Professional Requirements
This is a statutory Director of Public Health appointment, jointly appointed with the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care.
Applicants must be:
Registered on the GMC Specialist Register (Public Health Medicine) with a licence to practise, or
Included on the GDC Specialist List, or
Registered at specialist level with the UK Public Health Register (UKPHR).
Candidates must also hold Membership of the Faculty of Public Health (FPH) by examination, exemption or assessment (or an equivalent recognised qualification).
