Summary

Reception, data entry and preparation of samples of blood, urine, faeces and other samples ready for analysis. To effectively monitor the quality of samples arriving in the laboratory. To prepare, store and use chemical reagents required for laboratory investigations. To undertake manual, semi-automated and fully automated analysis of all specimens. To interpret and validate analytical results, ensuring accuracy and precision, order relevant follow up laboratory procedures, add technical and predefined clinically relevant comments, refer results for expert opinion and inform requestor of clinically significant results. To provide approved departmental information and advice to other healthcare professionals, patients and the public and to refer on to appropriate specialists requests for information outside their area of responsibility. To ensure the correct quality control procedures are applied. To take part in all internal and external quality control/assurance procedures, measuring and monitoring accuracy and imprecision of laboratory investigations. To carry out diagnostic analytical work in all sections of the specialist laboratory and to advise senior staff of performance or procedures affecting quality control. To undertake specialist technical investigations within the discipline. To undertake analysis of specimens which carry a high infective risk. To adhere at all times to the departments Standard Operating Procedures for carrying out analyses and to make recommendations for changes. To develop and maintain skills and knowledge appropriate to the BMS1 grade in order to benefit patient outcomes and treatment. To undertake routine maintenance of highly complex analytical equipment as specified in SOPs and to report any faults to a supervisor immediately. To undertake preliminary fault finding and corrective action when quality control procedures indicate loss of performance and to minimise equipment down time. To carry out first line equipment and method troubleshooting, to advise supervisor of situations requiring further action and work with service engineers to resolve faults. To undertake method and equipment evaluation as directed by supervisor. To maintain laboratory supplies and adhere to written procedures for stock management. To use resources efficiently. To ensure records are kept up to date and stored safely. To comply with local and national policies for safe, secure and confidential processing and storage of patient and other laboratory information. To participate in the training, mentoring and professional supervision of Trainee BMS's, Medical Laboratory Assistants and BSc students in the procedures for which the post holder is responsible. To participate in research and development and clinical audit when required and present the findings to a wide clinical audience to facilitate change and improve patient care. To participate in review of policies and procedures, COSHH and work place risk assessments. To participate in staff rotas, highlighting any deficiencies and communicating effectively with all staff members to enable all duties to be performed accurately and effectively and to promote good team work. To undertake general laboratory housekeeping as specified in SOPs. For short periods of time, the post holder may be required to deputise for the section supervisor.
