Job Outline

Title: Senior Clinical Fellow

Employer: Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Base Hospital: All posts are regarded as being Trust wide, but the base Hospital will be Bedford Hospital and there will not be an expectation for the successful candidate to work cross site

Duration: Fixed Term 12 Months

Learning Objectives/Specialist Interests 

The post comprises of approximately 100% of direct clinical time working in medical specialties on rotation. 

If required and on mutual agreement, it is possible (maximum of 20% i.e. approx. 2 half days per week) to agree noon clinical sessions for the development of specialty clinical interests or areas of expertise in support of clinical practice. This is once clear achievable objectives have been established. 

These could include: 

Quality Improvement 

Development of diagnostic procedural skills 

Teaching & Education 

Simulation training 

Clinical Leadership 

Patient Safety & Clinical Audit 

Where the interest of the individual extends beyond medicine specialties we will endeavour to support this 

Clinical Experience 

This is a non-training post but the Senior Clinical Fellows will get wide clinical experience,  supervised by consultant medical staff. All rotations are planned to give a variety of acute and specialty work. 

Duties and Responsibilities 

Routine and emergency patients must be seen and admitted expeditiously. 

Ward rounds and visits to individual patients as well as discussion with their relatives may be necessary. 

Keeping medical records as per GMC Good Medical practice  is utmost; these must be dated and initialed, together with any other related administrative duties including discharge and clinic letters. 

The patients discharge summary paperwork is to be completed prior to the patients discharge. Clinic letters are dictated within clinic and typed by the secretaries. 

Supervision of the Foundation Year 1 doctors when performing clinical duties.

Duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate Consultant(s), in consultation where possible with colleagues both senior and junior. Additional commitments arising under this paragraph are exceptional. In particular,  the doctor will not be required to undertake work of this kind for prolonged periods or on a regular basis.

Agree to read and follow any protocols laid down (either in writing or verbally) for the firm in which you are working.

 In case of any difficulties ensure that advice is sought from a senior colleague.

You will be assigned to work on a specific ward, however you may be required to cover other medical wards depending on service needs. You will participate in the standard medical -call rota. 

A full shift working pattern including on calls, not exceeding 48 hours including prospective cover for annual and study leave. The post holder will be paid a supplement for out of hours duty (if and when undertaking out of hours duty).

The post holder would be expected to perform additional duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.

The post holder would be expected to be available for such irregular commitments outside normally rostered duties as are essential for continuity of patient care.

On Call Duties
