Summary

W're looking for a dynamic, motivated and flexible individual to be part of a professional team maintaining and repairing medical devices within East Suffolk and North Essex Foundation Trust based at Ipswich Hospital and the local community.

You must possess an electronic background with medical device technology certification or equivalent training and experience. You will need to be able to work on your own initiative, have good interpersonal skills and a developed ability to communicate well.

This vacancy may close early if application numbers are high, so early application is advised.

You will be required to perform preventative maintenance, repair electromechanical devices, perform installations and calibrate equipment. In addition, you will to keep computerised service logs and report service issues to supervisors to ensure that equipment is maintained in accordance with compliance standards.

You will be required to work in the many areas of the Electro-Medical Engineering Department providing a top quality service to the wards and departments.

Key Responsibilities:

• Provide clinical technical services for servicing, inspection and repair with the aim of ensuring the safety, accuracy and reliability of a wide range of patient-critical medical equipment.

• Communicate with clinical users to gain a clear understanding of the nature of problems with equipment. Assess the seriousness and implications of the problem and respond appropriately to the urgency of the user request.

• Undertake fault finding. Apply suitable fault finding techniques to diagnose problems. Report unusual fault conditions to manufacturers. Exercise judgement to determine the causes of faults in devices with inter-related systems (e.g. electronic, computer and mechanical systems.

• Rectify equipment faults. Undertake repairs on mechanisms to component level.

• Check that equipment performs to manufacturer’s specification.

• Carry out calibration, quality control and safety testing.

• Carry out electrical and functional safety checks.

• Advise on equipment specification, evaluation and selection.

• Logging and supervision of loan, rented or hired equipment.

• Liaise with manufacturers to obtain information and provide feedback on equipment performance.

• The procurement of parts and services on the departments financial cost centre, following the Trust’s guidelines. This will sometimes include negotiation/persuasion, for example when obtaining loan equipment or free of charge replacements.

• Evaluation of new medical/test equipment, leading to the subsequent acceptance of the equipment by the department.

• Ensuring the safe disposal of condemned items/waste as per regulations (WEE, RoHS etc) and Trust policies.

• Ensuring the calibration of workshop tools/test equipment to be able to ensure the calibration of repaired/PPM’d medical devices.

• Plan and prioritise own workload.

• Confirming that the work carried out by contractors is of a satisfactory level before the equipment is returned for use.

• Compiling and maintaining a written and computerised register of medical equipment, including but not restricted to, scientific and technical records of work performed, device details, relevant specifications, location, and technical history including all test results that are generated. In particular ensure the equipment information is maintained in an accurate, methodical manner with work being logged as it progresses until completion.

• Action as appropriate NHS or manufacturers’ safety and hazard notices.

• Be familiar with and follow the trust’s incident reporting procedure notifying the Section Head of any circumstances or clinical incidents involving any medical device.

• Investigation into the probable cause of equipment failure after an incident, leading to the operation of the Defect and Failure Report procedure when necessary. This will include compiling a detailed report for the MHRA (Medicine and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency) and the MDSO (Medical Device Safety Officer).

• Communicating technical information of a complex nature to colleagues/suppliers relating to the use of equipment and fault symptoms/remedies. This information might also be passed onto the user
