Role Purpose
To ensure all Navigators premises across Greater Manchester are safe, secure, well maintained and welcoming, supporting the effective delivery of provision and the wellbeing of students, staff and visitors. The Facilities Assistant will work across multiple sites, maintaining high standards and responding flexibly to operational priorities.
Key Responsibilities
Multi-Site Working
Work across Navigators sites throughout Greater Manchester as required.
Maintain consistent standards of safety, maintenance and presentation.
Prioritise workload effectively across locations and respond to changing demands.
Build positive working relationships with staff and provide clear communication and handovers.
Security and Site Access
Open and close buildings as required, including occasional out-of-hours activities.
Secure buildings, gates, doors and windows and ensure sites are safe for use.
Act as a key holder and participate in a rota that may include mornings, evenings, weekends and emergency call-outs.
Respond appropriately to site emergencies and report issues promptly.
Safeguarding, Health & Safety
Maintain safe environments with safeguarding as a key priority.
Carry out routine health and safety checks, including fire alarms, emergency lighting and site inspections.
Identify hazards, report defects and take appropriate action to make areas safe.
Ensure contractors comply with safeguarding and health and safety requirements.
Facilities and Maintenance
Carry out general maintenance and minor repairs including:
Basic plumbing
Replacing light bulbs and tubes
Painting and decorating
Installing shelving and fixtures
Minor equipment repairs
Additional responsibilities include:
Monitoring building condition and addressing defects.
Liaising with contractors and monitoring completed work.
Maintaining maintenance records and fault logs.
Moving furniture, equipment and deliveries as required.
Grounds and External Areas
Maintain external areas through litter collection, sweeping and waste management.
Clear drains, gullies and pathways.
Manage seasonal issues including ice, snow, leaves, moss and weeds.
Undertake basic grounds maintenance and gardening tasks where required.
Operational Support
Prepare facilities for meetings, events, inspections and activities.
Support the smooth day-to-day running of Navigators provision.
Attend relevant meetings and training.
Provide updates and handovers to colleagues where necessary.
Professional Conduct
Act professionally and courteously with students, staff, visitors and contractors.
Work independently and use initiative to resolve issues.
Maintain confidentiality and comply with organisational policies.
Demonstrate commitment to Navigators' values and continuous improvement.
Skills and Abilities
Practical maintenance skills, including minor repairs, decorating and basic plumbing.
Ability to manage workload independently across multiple sites.
Strong organisational and time management skills.
Ability to identify hazards and maintenance issues and take appropriate action.
Effective communication skills with staff, students, contractors and visitors.
Experience supervising contractors and ensuring compliance with site procedures.
Strong problem-solving skills and a practical approach to unexpected situations.
Ability to maintain accurate records and complete safety checks.
Basic IT skills, including email and digital record keeping.
Flexible approach to working hours where required.
Professional, reliable and approachable manner.
Experience and Qualifications
Essential
Good standard of education, including GCSE English and Maths (or equivalent).
Experience in facilities, site or building maintenance, including minor repairs and safety checks.
Ability to work independently, prioritise tasks and use initiative.
Experience managing a varied workload.
Experience of working safely and following health and safety procedures.
Experience communicating effectively with staff, contractors and visitors.
Ability to maintain accurate records and documentation.
Full UK driving licence, access to own vehicle with business insurance and ability to travel across Greater Manchester.
Willingness to undertake mandatory training, including safeguarding and health and safety.
Desirable
Experience in an education, youth, alternative provision or child-centred environment.
Experience supervising contractors.
Experience managing facilities across multiple sites.
Experience as a key holder and responding to out-of-hours issues.
Grounds maintenance experience.
Experience supporting inspections, audits or compliance activities.
Relevant facilities or trade qualifications/training, such as plumbing, fire safety or IOSH.
First Aid qualification.
Experience using maintenance tracking or fault-reporting systems.
