Summary

The South West London and St Georges CAMHS DBT Service are seeking to recruit an Assistant Psychologist.

The post may be of particular interest to those wanting to gain experience in the field of clinical psychology. It is a busy post comprising clinical and research support demands. The post holder will support the clinical team to operate effectively and efficiently in their work within the DBT Service and will be involved with service user assessment and research activity. There will be regular opportunities for observation and support of clinical activity, including assessments and DBT skills groups.

The post holder will receive regular supervision from a Clinical Psychologist. Former holders of this post have a very high success rate of obtaining a post on a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology course. We particularly welcome applications from those underrepresented in psychology, such as males and individuals from BAME backgrounds.

CAMHS Services in South West London have a DBT service for the young people of Sutton, Merton, Wandsworth, Kingston and Richmond.

This team has strong relationships with other CAMHS outpatient services, and with other DBT teams working with young people across south London.

As a service we offer an intensive psychological assessment and treatment programme, including weekly skills groups for parents/carers and the adolescents. Young people aged 13-18 years, with a history of self-harm and suicidal behaviour and traits of emerging Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) are eligible for the programme.

DBT is a NICE guideline recommended evidence-based therapy. DBT has been shown to be effective with clients with suicidal behaviours and symptoms associated with emerging BPD (e.g. impulsive behaviours, emotional dysregulation, difficulties with relationships etc). The treatment targets self-harm behaviours and other high risk behaviours and helps people to manage their emotions, improve their relationships with others and to cope with difficult thoughts and feelings.

The post holder will support the clinical team to operate effectively and efficiently in their work within the DBT Service.

They will be taking on specific clinical and research support duties. This might include involvement in diagnostic assessments and draft preparation of clinical reports, data collection (qualitative and quantitative), preparation of databases and analysis of service development, audit, research and promotion of service user involvement.

The post holder will be mainly involved with service user assessment and research activity as well as having a clinical role in observing and supporting clinical activity.

They will be a key point of contact for young people, families and carers, as well as other members of the young person’s network.

The post holder will also assist in various other clinical and research-related tasks.
