Summary

The over-riding purpose is to support the provision of the highest quality patient care through personal actions and continuous improvement. Whilst on duty a doctor has clinical and professional responsibility for their patients. It is also the duty of a doctor to: Keep patients (and/or their carers if appropriate) informed about their condition. Involve patients (and/or their carers if appropriate) in decision making about their treatment. Maintain professional standards and obligations as set out from time to time by the General Medical Council (GMC) and comply with GMCs guidance on Good Medical Practice as amended or substituted from time to time. A doctor is responsible for carrying out any work related to and reasonably incidental to the duties set out in the Job Plan such as: The keeping of records and the provision of reports. The proper delegation of tasks. Maintaining skills and knowledge. Doctors will be expected to be flexible and to cooperate with reasonable requests to cover for their colleagues absence where they are safe and competent and where it is practicable to do so. Critically reflects on own competence, understands own limits, and seeks help when required. Patient safety and quality improvement Takes prompt action where there is an issue with safety or quality of patient care, raises and escalates concerns, through clinical governance systems, where necessary. Collaborates with multidisciplinary and interprofessional teams to manage risk and issues across organisations and settings, with respect for and recognition of the roles of other health professionals. We would encourage the post holder to contribute to Quality Improvement processes including sustainable development within the department and across the trust. Education and training Critically assesses own learning needs and ensure a personal development plan reflects both clinical practice and the relevant generic capabilities to lead and develop services. Promotes and participates in individual and team learning, supporting the educational need of individuals and teams for multi-professional, multidisciplinary and interprofessional learning. Identifies and creates safe and supportive working and learning environments. Can act as a role model, educator, supervisor, coach or mentor for medical and non-medical practitioners. Creates effective learning opportunities and provides developmental feedback, both verbally and in writing, to learners and doctors in training, as required by the role. Plans and provides effective teaching and training activities as required by the role. Understands how to raise concerns about the behaviour or performance of any learner who is under their clinical supervision. Takes part in patient education. Research and scholarship Keeps up-to-date with current research and best practice in the individuals specific area of practice, through appropriate continuing professional development activities and their own independent study and reflection. Critically appraises and understands the relevance of literature, conducting literature searches and reviews; disseminates best practice including from quality improvement projects. Locates and uses clinical guidelines appropriately. Communicates and interprets research evidence in a meaningful way for patients to support shared decision-making. Works towards identifying the need for further research to strengthen the evidence base or where there are gaps in knowledge, networking with teams within and outside the organisation.
