Summary

We are looking for  suitably qualified Biomedical Scientist. Come  to join the team in this busy laboratory, which offers experience in a wide range of histological techniques on a fixed term contract for 24 months

The role may include routine Histology, dissection, Immunocytochemistry, Electron Microscopy, Neuropathology and Non-Gynaecological Cytology. The department is fully computerised and processes approximately 34,000 surgical specimens per annum.

The successful candidate must fulfill the personal specification requirements 

The Cellular Pathology Team work alongside 14 Consultant Histopathologist, Specialist trainees, and a SAS doctor in the Department of Cellular Pathology within a large and established Pathology Directorate providing Neuropathology, Histopathology, Immunohistochemistry, Non Gynaecological Cytology, Electron Microscopy and Autopsy services to Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

To direct more junior staff regarding technical and work issues

Dealing with telephone enquiries from nurses, clinicians, healthcare practitioners, giving technical advice on results and use of the service

Appropriate recording of Inventory management within the section to ensure accurate recording of receipt and issue of stock

Work flexibly

Where appropriate, to explain testing procedures and risks to patients and their guardians; collect data on patients health and medication and to obtain informed consent for procedure, if required

To assist in effective verbal and written communication by qualified and unqualified staff

To communicate, as appropriate, using information technology

Report any issues and complaints to appropriate person

Performs work duties to the standards required as a HCPC Biomedical Scientist

Undertake the correct procedures for the handling of specimens, pre and post analysis.

Maintain and operate equipment used in the preparation and analysis of specimens.

Perform a range of specialist and routine laboratory tests autonomously and demonstrate an understanding of the scientific basis for tests and the disease processes under investigation.

Demonstrate awareness of factors affecting sample integrity, risks associated with the sample reagents, or method and other tests indicated by the outcome of the analysis.

Use the main laboratory computer system in accordance with service requirements

Performs work consistent with health and safety legislation, policies, procedures and assessment of risk

Ensures that all adverse incidents are reported to Datix (and to the MHRA where appropriate) in a timely manner

Correct and safe use and safety of equipment and physical environment.

Troubleshooting complex issues on analytical equipment

Receipt, checking, preparation, safe handling, dealing with spillage and storage of biological samples for analysis (including high risk samples).

Teach and train staff specialised  techniques
