Summary

A rare opportunity has arisen to join North West London Pathology (NWLP), one of the UK's largest diagnostic pathology providers, delivering UKAS-accredited (ISO 15189:2022) services. Our Cellular Pathology service operates a hub-and-spoke model, with Histopathology, Cytology and Electron Microscopy at Charing Cross Hospital, and the Specialist Integrated Haematological Malignancy Diagnostic Service (SIHMDS) at Hammersmith Hospital. The Histopathology department also provides an extensive immunocytochemistry service.

We are seeking an ambitious Consultant to join our specialist trophoblast and germ cell team in a substantive 10 PA post. The job plan includes 2 PAs of protected research time, offering a rare opportunity to develop an academic portfolio alongside clinical practice. This Monday to Friday role has no on-call commitment, with consultants attending MDTs remotely to support integrated, patient centred care.

NWLP is one of only three UK centres reporting Gestational Trophoblastic Disease (GTD). You will work with expert pathology and clinical oncology colleagues diagnosing GTD, germ cell tumours and atypical placental site nodules (APSN). Referrals are received from Trusts across southern England, with second opinions provided on complex cases from the other UK centres. As part of a world leading Academic Health Science Centre, you'll benefit from outstanding opportunities for research, education, leadership and career development.

The successful candidate will join our nationally recognised trophoblast and germ cell consultant team, working closely with expert pathology colleagues and the clinical oncology team at the Imperial Trophoblast Centre, Charing Cross Hospital. As one of only three UK specialist centres, this role offers exposure to a unique and complex case mix, with opportunities for national collaboration and service development.

You will play a key role in delivering a high-quality diagnostic service, undertaking specialist investigations, reporting complex cases, contributing to MDTs, driving innovation and supporting the wider Cellular Pathology service. Consultant cross-cover during annual and study leave is expected.

Working within a UKAS-accredited service, you will contribute to quality assurance, the Quality Management System and continuous improvement. Digital slide reporting is fully embedded across all specialties, with training and validation provided. The service also benefits from a scientist-led dissection service and a fully digital frozen section service.

The department has a strong reputation for education and is committed to training doctors and scientific staff. The role offers a balance of direct clinical care (DCC), supporting professional activities (SPA) and dedicated research time, providing an excellent opportunity to develop your clinical, academic and leadership career.

North West London Pathology (NWLP) is an NHS pathology partnership joint venture between Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, Chelsea & Westminster NHS Foundation Trust and The Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. NWLP is modelled as a shared services organisation jointly owned by the three Trusts. The organisation is hosted by Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and as the legal entity for NWLP our staff are employed by Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.

NWLP is based on a ‘hub and spoke’ structure; the majority of routine, specialist and non-urgent activity is centralised at our hub site at Charing Cross Hospital. Urgent tests required for immediate patient management and treatment are performed in 24/7 Essential Service Laboratories based on-site within the seven hospital sites in the group.

The partnership has created an innovative and sustainable service that delivers outstanding quality to users and patients alike. This innovative approach allows the service to better manage demand, standardise operations, improve value for money and make use of state-of-the-art technology.

Delivering Science, Supporting Healthcare -Our vision is to be a state of the art integrated pathology network, delivering diagnostics to users and patients alike across primary, secondary and tertiary care. To be at the forefront of diagnostic innovation, translating research into routine pathology.

We are seeking a passionate and enthusiastic Consultant Pathologist to join Cellular Pathology at NWLP as part of our highly specialised trophoblast and germ cell consultant team.

You will work within an experienced multidisciplinary team, delivering a high-quality diagnostic pathology service, participating in MDTs, contributing to external quality assurance and supporting safe, effective, patient-centred care.

Working closely with clinical, laboratory and managerial colleagues, you will help maintain high standards of quality, governance and service delivery while contributing to audit, innovation and service improvement. With dedicated research time built into the post, you'll have the opportunity to advance this highly specialised field and improve understanding of these complex diseases to benefit patient care.

The department has a strong academic culture, with excellent opportunities to contribute to education, training and research. You will teach, supervise and mentor resident doctors and scientific staff, while developing leadership skills and contributing to regional networks.

We are committed to helping our staff reach their full potential through professional development, flexible working and home working where service needs allow.
