Summary
BHRUT is a large University Hospital Trust in outer Northeast London with a catchment population of over 800,000. In addition to nearly 400 WTE Consultant and Specialty Doctors, it also employs over 400 postgraduate medical trainees in a large range of specialities. It is a major placement provider for undergraduate medical students, primarily from Queen Mary University of London (Barts & The London School of Medicine).
Medical Education are seeking to appoint Medical Education Fellows to support continuation and improvement of medical education and training throughout the trust, both for undergraduates and postgraduates. Opportunities will exist to work in our high-fidelity Simulation Training Centre, delivering full immersion human factors simulation training, regular medical undergraduate case-based learning and to undertake research or quality improvement projects.
The Fellow will have the optional element to undertake 2 x clinical sessions (1 x standard day), in a specialty of their choice, to be agreed with the individual at interview, and arranged around the training schedule requirements. This post is ideally suited to doctors wishing to gain further experience in medical education/academia, before embarking on specialist training.
This post is designed to support postgraduate medical trainees (at Core or ST level), who wish to make a commitment to education as part of their career. The 12-month fixed-term post, based at BHRUT, is aimed at those who wish to build on their personal teaching experience, develop expertise in educational theory and practice, and undertake supervised educational research.
The post holder will have a designated educational mentor who will oversee their development as an educator during the placement and co-ordinate opportunities for personal development. A customized programme of training and educational experience will be designed around the needs of the individual.
Although an enthusiasm for teaching is a prerequisite, no assumptions will be made about formal knowledge of educational theory or practice. Hands-on teaching will be central to the post, as will a critical engagement with educational issues around providing undergraduate and postgraduate training in a changing context, both nationally and locally.
Participants will be encouraged to develop a sustained commitment to education within their clinical career, and it is expected that the Fellow will attend a formal Simulation/Human Factors Train the Trainer development course.
We’re an organisation that is getting better and better and our improvements are driven by a determination to deliver care we’re proud of and our patients are happy with.
They are benefitting from a new electronic patient record (we were the last acute trust in London to introduce one) and our maternity services have been rated good by the Care Quality Commission.
We operate from two main sites – KGH in Goodmayes and Queen’s Hospital in Romford. We have two busy emergency departments with more than 346,000 people visiting them last year. We’re campaigning to secure the £35m we need to transform the A&E at Queen’s and get rid of corridor care.
We’re proud of our regional Neurosciences Centre, Radiotherapy Centre and Hyper Acute Stroke Unit. We’re also part of the North East London Cancer Alliance.
We run a Women’s Health Hub in Ilford; an Ageing Well Centre in Hornchurch; and Community Diagnostic Centres (CDC) at Barking Community Hospital and at St George’s Health and Wellbeing Hub. These CDCs are open 12 hours a day, 7 days a week.
The majority of our 8,400 staff – who come from 146 different countries - live in the three diverse London boroughs we serve and are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups. Many can work flexibly and more than 400 of them are on our Ofsted accredited apprenticeship programmes. We’re proud to be a London Living Wage employer.
