Junior Clinical Education Fellow

2 Posts for 12 months starting September 2026

Post holders will work in an acute or general medicine environment, managing a variety of medical presentations. During the education component of the role, post holders will work closely with the Undergraduate Administrative and Clinical Skills teams.

This post is ideal for those who:

• Have completed foundation training

• Have an interest in Medical Education

Post would be ideal for a motivated junior doctor who is interested in developing both their acute medical skills and teaching portfolio. Post holders will divide their time between clinical work and teaching on a 6 monthly basis.

Post holders will work closely with the Undergraduate Medical Education team to facilitate the teaching and development of undergraduate medical learners, which can include medical students, student physician associates and students on elective placements.

We operate from three main hospitals-Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

JOB ROLE

We are looking to appoint 2JuniorClinical Education Fellows to work intheMECCS DivisionatFurness General Hospitaland to deliver high quality undergraduate medical education to students from Lancaster University andUniversityof Central Lancashire. The post-holder will have, as a minimum, completed the UK Foundation Programme Training; the post would be ideal for a motivated junior doctor who is interested in developing both their acute medical skills and teaching portfolio. It is envisaged that the post-holders will divide their time between clinical work and teaching on a6- monthly basis, an example is included below:

The doctor will have the opportunity to work closely with senior colleagues and thereby gain experience and confidence within the specialty they are working.

The doctor is ward based in an acute settingduring their clinicalcomponent, working Monday to Friday, 8 hours per day.

Duties of the post include:

Taking responsibility for the continuity of care of inpatients.

• Supervision of inpatients and organisingappropriate investigationsin accordance withseniordoctorinstructions.

• Agreeing diagnosis and completingdischargesummaries

• To prescribesafely.

• Ensureappropriate informationis made available to staff to measure clinical performance and enable meaningful benchmarks to beestablishedand evaluatedwithinyour area of responsibility.

• Provide a role model of professional leadership, which underpins the corporate values and behaviours agreed by the organisation, ensuring these are understood anddemonstratedby the medical workforce within your area and take remedial action where poor behaviourisdemonstrated.

TEACHING

The post-holder will work closely with theUndergraduate MedicalEducationteamtofacilitatethe teaching and development of undergraduatemedical learners, which can include medical students, student physician associates and students on elective placements.

Bedside teaching is encouragedtooffer a safe and supervised environment for students to learn about the inpatient journey as practicably as possible.

Classroom-based sessions are alsoan important componentof these roles; these will include introductions to Medicine, case-baseddiscussionsand problem-based learning sessions tohelpstudents toconsolidatethe knowledge gained in clinical areas.

The post holder will also be expected toassistin thedevelopmentofsimulation-basededucation and the use of digital learning.

The post holder will be encouraged and supported by seniors to develop their own teaching methods and style.

Feedback will be soughtfrom thelearnerson a regular basis and the post-holder will be expected andrequiredto reflect on this feedback and implement any changes that are considered necessary as aresult.

ClinicalEducation Fellows are offered the opportunity to do a funded Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education at the University of Central Lancashire.

POST GRADUATE TRAINING

This post is NOT recognised for postgraduate training, however, the experience that the post-holdergains will be an attractive asset tofurnish their CV withwhen considering applying to formal training programmes in the future.

Furness General has an excellent and forward-thinking Undergraduate MedicalEducationDepartment which is keen to develop further, facing the challenges in the current climate of delivering high quality medicaleducation.

The post-holder will be expected to ensure they stay at the forefront of changes in legislation, innovations in staff engagement and will take responsibility for their own educational development and review their development needs in the context of theirprofessionalrequirements.

Medicallearnersfrom Lancaster Medical School and UCLAN Medical School receive training in Cumbria and North Lancashire.
