Summary

Within this role you will be expected to co-ordinate the daily management of the Neonatal Unit in conjunction with the senior nursing team in order to make the most effective efficient use of staff

You will ensure that each aby receives individualised care appropriate to their needs, whilst maintaining a safe environment.

You will be a clinical expert in the field of neonates, holding a continuing responsibility for the delivery of high-quality patient care.

You will be responsible for the supervision and development of all nurses, students, and support workers within the field of neonates and demonstrate a high degree of motivation.

You will effectively manage the ward resources.

You will be a visible point of contact for infants parent/carers, visitors, relatives and staff, acting as a resource of problem solving and needs.

 

To work as a member of a multi-disciplinary team, recognising the contribution of others while maintaining high standards of neonatal care which reflects all aspects of the unit's philosophy of care.

Act as a leader and role model for all members of the nursing team.

Liaise with the medical team regarding potential admissions/transfer/discharges to and from the unit. Ensure appropriate arrangements are in place for community referrals.

Be responsible with the medical staff for information giving, breaking sensitive news to families.

Promote the application of current research into clinical practice and take a lead role in initiating agreed changes within the neonatal unit.

Be proactive in  risk management, clinical incident reporting and management of complaints.

Take an active role in the appraisal of junior staff, identifying their training and professional development. Contribute to the formal teaching teaching programme for all nursing and midwifery students and staff.

Maintain a positive learning environment  and be responsible for ensuring all staff attend their mandatory training.

Participate in the development of unit policies of the neonatal service as appropriate.  To be an active member of the neonatal network.

Deputise for the matron as appropriate.
