Summary
Key Result Areas Clinical Practice Manage an independent caseload of skin cancer patients within nurse-led clinics, providing advanced assessment, clinical decision-making and follow-up care. Perform skin and lymph node examinations, identifying benign and malignant lesions and escalating concerns appropriately. Receive and make referrals, working collaboratively with other specialist teams to ensure optimal quality of care.jobs. Deliver difficult news in a sensitive, compassionate and professional manner, providing specialist support to patients, relatives and carers at the point of diagnosis. Communicate complex clinical information clearly and confidently to support informed decision-making, symptom management and follow-up planning. Patient Support and Education Support and advise individuals diagnosed with skin cancer, ensuring a seamless pathway and an excellent patient experience. Teach patients how to perform skin and lymph node self-examination and provide education on skin cancer prevention and self-management. Provide emotional and psychological support as part of a holistic approach to care. Service Management and Leadership Support the Clinical Service Manager in the operational management of the skin cancer service, including clinic capacity, demand management and waiting time oversight. Provide day-to-day oversight of nurse-led clinics, supporting safe staffing, skill mix and patient flow. Provide clinical supervision, coaching and informal support to Band 5 and Band 6 staff working within the pathway, escalating formal management issues as required. Contribute to workforce planning, induction, competency development and safe allocation of duties within the service. Monitor activity and performance data, supporting reports, escalation and action planning for senior nursing leadership. MDT and Pathway Coordination Participate in skin cancer multidisciplinary team meetings and contribute specialist nursing advice to case discussion and pathway decisions. Work collaboratively with dermatology, oncology, surgical and primary care teams to coordinate timely and effective care. Identify and escalate pathway delays, service risks or operational concerns to the Clinical Service Manager. Quality, Audit and Service Development Evaluate the quality of care delivered by undertaking audits, reviewing outcomes and implementing improvements where required. Develop and implement patient-centred Standard Operating Procedures and contribute to local protocols and guidance. Identify and contribute to opportunities for innovation, service redesign and continuous improvement within skin cancer care. Participate in governance processes, patient feedback activity and quality improvement initiatives. Education and Training Act as an expert resource and facilitator to educate and train nursing staff, students and other healthcare professionals. Contribute to induction, teaching sessions and practice development within dermatology and skin cancer nursing. Support the development of nursing practice through coaching, supervision and sharing of specialist knowledge. Communication Demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills in all aspects of patient care, team working and service reporting. Maintain accurate and timely documentation in line with Trust policy, professional standards and legal requirements. Communicate sensitively with patients and families, particularly when discussing diagnosis, treatment plans, symptoms or concerns. Responsibility for People Work as an autonomous practitioner within a defined specialist caseload while contributing to the wider multidisciplinary team. Provide leadership, supervision and support to Band 5 and Band 6 nursing staff, students and support workers. Support staff development through teaching, mentoring, induction and competency-based learning. Support the Clinical Service Manager in planning activity to meet service demand and waiting time targets. Use resources appropriately, ensuring safe and effective delivery of clinical services. Contribute to business cases, service development proposals or activity reporting where required. Responsibility for Information Maintain accurate patient records, clinic documentation and correspondence. Collect, interpret and report service data, audit findings and patient feedback to support service improvement. Handle confidential information in line with Trust policy, GDPR and professional standards. Analytical and Judgement Skills Use advanced clinical judgement to assess, interpret and act on findings from skin and lymph node examination. Recognise deterioration, escalation needs and pathway delays, taking appropriate action in a timely manner. Analyse service activity, audit data and patient feedback to identify trends and improvement opportunities. Make safe, evidence-based decisions within own scope of practice and escalate when required. Planning and Organisational Skills Prioritise and manage an independent caseload, balancing clinical commitments, clinic activity and service demands. Contribute to clinic planning, workload allocation and pathway coordination to ensure timely patient care. Organise teaching, audit, service development and MDT commitments alongside clinical responsibilities. Work flexibly and responsively to support service needs and changing priorities. Policy and Service Development Develop, implement and review Standard Operating Procedures and local pathways for skin cancer care. Contribute to the development of service policies, guidelines and patient information materials. Participate in service redesign, innovation and quality improvement initiatives. Ensure practice remains aligned with evidence-based care, national guidance and Trust governance arrangements. Professional Responsibilities Maintain current NMC registration and comply with the NMC Code at all times. Maintain and develop competence through ongoing professional development and reflective practice. Demonstrate a commitment to safe, effective and compassionate care. Undertake mandatory training and specialist development relevant to the role.
