Summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experience band 5 SLT or existing band 6 to join the Aintree hospital acute SLT and stroke teams on rotation.
The successful applicant will already have sound clinical skills in the acute adult population and the ability to manage a busy and complex dysphagia caseload. You will be required to support less experience staff developing their clinical knowledge and reasoning. You will possess excellent communication skills, demonstrate the ability to work flexibly and have a good understanding of MDT working.
Developing skills in leadership, supervision, quality improvement and service management will be essential to complete this training post to Band 7 level. This role will also provide opportunities to develop both clinical and leadership skills within the SLT team and the wider organisation.You will work closely with the band 8 clinical leads and other band 7 SLTs in the service with regularopportunities for senior support and peer supervision, and relevant training will be provided.
The post holder will be part of a team managing a complex communication and dysphagia caseload across acute medical and surgical wards. Experience in Videofluoroscopy and FEES is preferred. The acute Speech Therapy team also provides cross cover into other specialist areas (including respiratory and stroke populations) as appropriate.
You will take part in and lead on monitoring the team performance, identifying areas for service development, audit, and research. The post holder will be actively involved in the support and development of others including Band 5 SLTs, therapy assistants, and students. You will also have the opportunity to provide training sessions within the wider MDT.

Clinical
1. Undertake assessment of patients, using specialist clinical reasoning and assessment techniques to differentially diagnose then formulate and implement treatment plans with advice and support from seniors as required.
2. Continually evaluate the efficacy of the treatment programme to ensure that it is meeting the needs of the patient
3. Monitor the effectiveness of the interventions you are providing using outcome measures.
4. Work closely with other members of the multidisciplinary team – attending meetings/case conferences where possible, actively encouraging information sharing to enhance the quality of care to patients and staff.
5. Ensure effective communication with patients, carers and other Health Care Professionals regarding all aspects of the patient’s care. This will be achieved through direct liaison or written information using specialist knowledge, tailored to individual needs and taking account of impaired comprehension and expression.
6. Help other Health Care Professionals communicate with patients who have impaired language skills using alternative communication systems where appropriate.
7. Advise assist and support, less experienced therapists and assistants in the management of their caseload.
Managerial and Leadership
1. Collect patient data and other statistics as required by Head of Department.
2. Advise the Head of Department of any change in caseload profile which has an impact on the service provided to facilitate planning.
3. Monitor equipment and material for condition and suitability. Submit orders via head of department.
Maintain registration with the Health Professions Council and the Royal College of Speech & Language Therapists.
2. Adhere to RCSLT standards and guidelines relating to Clinical Practice
(Communicating Quality 2) patients with acquired disorders.
3. Adhere to HPC guidelines for professional conduct.
4. Be involved in carrying out audit as requested.
5. Ensure assessment methods and treatment techniques comply with the best
available clinical evidence/consensus practice.
6. Comply with departmental policies, procedures and guidelines.
7. Be responsible for maintaining accurate and comprehensive patients’ records
in line with Trust and Departmental Standards of Practice.
8. Advise on complaints when patient is known to you to facilitate manager’s response.
9. Comply with the Data Protection Act and Caldicott recommendations.
10. Ensure working practices and use of resources complies with current legislative and Trust Health and Safety Policies.
11. Attend Mandatory Training – fire, CPR and manual handling as specified by the Trust.
12. Ensure all accidents, incidents and hazards are dealt with effectively and reported according to Trust requirements.
Be responsible for maintaining own competency to practice through CPD activities and maintain a portfolio which reflects personal development.
2. Develop clinical skills whilst recognising personal limitations and referring to specialist colleagues when appropriate.
3. Identify evidence of good practice continually updating and developing your knowledge of evidence-based practice for acquired disorders.
4. Attend relevant postgraduate training courses. Disseminate course information as required.
5. Complete yearly appraisal and a Personal Development Plan with manager.
6. Provide training and teaching to SLT students/assistants, other professional groups in the Trust, local agencies and voluntary services.
