Summary

The Senior Sales Assistant will support the Shop Manager in the successful operation and development of our charity shop in Galashiels, helping to maximise income from donated goods while delivering excellent customer service and supporting staff and volunteers.

Key Responsibilities

Sales, Income and Community Engagement:

Support the achievement of sales and surplus targets through effective pricing, merchandising and cost control.

Research and price stock appropriately to maximise income, identifying valuable items where required.

Support the development of online sales and other income-generating opportunities.

Build positive relationships with the local community and businesses to raise awareness of Borders Pet Rescue and encourage quality donations.

Promote the charity, its work, campaigns and animal welfare mission to customers, volunteers and the wider community.

Team and Volunteer Support:

Assist with the recruitment, induction, training and retention of volunteers.

Allocate and supervise tasks, providing guidance and support to staff and volunteers and helping them develop their skills.

Support effective staff and volunteer rotas and ensure relevant information is communicated clearly.

Work collaboratively with the Shop Manager and contribute to a positive, inclusive and motivated team environment.

In the Manager’s absence, provide appropriate support in the day-to-day management and performance of the shop.

Stock and Shop Operations:

Receive, prepare, rotate and organise stock to maximise sales and ensure an appropriate range and volume of merchandise.

Maintain attractive shop and window displays and support promotional activity.

Ensure donated goods are safe, suitable and legally compliant for sale, including appropriate testing of electrical items.

Maintain high standards of housekeeping, shop presentation and security.

Customer Service:

Deliver excellent customer service and ensure a welcoming, friendly atmosphere for customers, staff and volunteers.

Deal with customer queries and complaints promptly and constructively, using feedback to improve the customer experience.

Administration, Finance and Compliance:

Complete required daily and weekly administration accurately and within agreed timescales.

Follow procedures for till operation, cash handling, reconciliation, banking and the secure storage of cash, as required.

Support stock takes and maintain accurate records and management information using relevant IT systems.

Ensure compliance with GDPR, Retail Gift Aid, BPR policies and all relevant legal and regulatory requirements.

Health, Safety and Security:

Help maintain a clean, safe and welcoming environment for staff, volunteers, customers and the public.

Follow and support compliance with health and safety, fire safety, public health, manual handling and security procedures.

Complete required checks and risk assessments and report accidents and incidents promptly.
