Summary
Job title Phlebotomist Reports to Lead Practice Nurse for clinical supervision Line manager Practice Manager Accountable to GP Partners Location Saltdean and Rottingdean Medical Practice Contract type Permanent part-time Job purpose To provide a safe efficient and patient-centred phlebotomy service in accordance with practice policies agreed protocols and the limits of the post-holder training and assessed competence The post-holder will obtain blood samples following an authorised clinical request maintain accurate records prepare specimens for transport and support the smooth running of the treatment room and wider practice team Scope of the role The post-holder will work under the clinical direction of the Lead Practice Nurse or another registered clinician The post-holder will work within agreed protocols and will not diagnose interpret clinical results undertake independent clinical assessment or make treatment decisions The patient groups included within the service will be agreed by the Lead Practice Nurse and will reflect the post-holder training competence and local pathology requirements Phlebotomy and specimen handling Check the clinical request and confirm that the requested procedure falls within the agreed scope of practice Confirm the patient identity using the practice identification procedure and obtain valid consent before starting the procedure Explain the procedure clearly and support patients who are anxious distressed needle-phobic or at risk of fainting Undertake venepuncture safely using the correct equipment specimen tubes and order of draw Observe the venepuncture site after the procedure provide appropriate aftercare advice and respond to immediate complications within training and practice protocols Label specimens accurately at the point of collection and check details against the patient record and request Store package and prepare specimens for collection or transport in line with pathology and infection prevention requirements Record the procedure accurately and promptly in SystmOne including relevant observations unsuccessful attempts advice given and any escalation Report failed samples labelling errors incidents near misses equipment problems and patient concerns promptly Escalate symptoms unexpected findings deterioration or concerns to a registered clinician without delay Patient care and communication Treat patients carers and colleagues with dignity courtesy and respect Maintain privacy and confidentiality during all patient contact Adapt communication to meet individual needs including sensory language learning or cognitive needs Recognise the limits of the role and refer clinical questions to an appropriate registered clinician Support safe patient flow and liaise with reception administrative and clinical colleagues where appointments or follow-up arrangements need attention Clinical records and administration Maintain complete accurate and contemporaneous patient records Use SystmOne and other authorised practice systems in accordance with information governance requirements Support the booking recall or rebooking of patients where this forms part of the agreed local process Communicate relevant non-clinical information to the appropriate team member and ensure urgent matters are escalated Equipment stock and treatment room standards Prepare the clinical room and equipment before each session and leave the area clean safe and ready for use Follow hand hygiene personal protective equipment aseptic technique and infection prevention procedures Dispose of sharps blood-contaminated materials and clinical waste safely and in the correct waste stream Check stock levels expiry dates and storage conditions and report or order supplies through the agreed practice process Report damaged faulty or missing equipment and remove unsafe equipment from use where appropriate Support routine cleaning checks and environmental standards within the clinical area Quality safety and governance Follow practice policies standard operating procedures and local clinical protocols Report incidents near misses safeguarding concerns and risks through the practice reporting and escalation process Participate in significant event learning and service reviews where relevant to the role Maintain professional boundaries and seek support when a request falls outside the post-holder training or competence Contribute to safe effective and consistent working practices across the practice Team working and development Work constructively with GPs nurses healthcare support staff reception and administrative colleagues Attend relevant meetings briefings and training sessions where required Complete mandatory training within required timescales Participate in appraisal supervision and competency review and maintain evidence of training and competence Support the induction of colleagues into local phlebotomy processes where requested and within competence Confidentiality and information governance The post-holder must protect confidential information relating to patients carers staff and the practice Information must only be accessed used or shared for a legitimate work purpose and in accordance with UK GDPR the Data Protection Act NHS confidentiality requirements and practice policy Safeguarding The post-holder must follow the practice safeguarding policies for children and adults complete required training and report concerns promptly through the agreed route Health safety and infection prevention The post-holder must take reasonable care of their own health and safety and the health and safety of others The post-holder must follow infection prevention sharps safety clinical waste lone working emergency and incident reporting procedures Equality diversity and inclusion The post-holder must support the rights dignity and individual needs of patients carers and colleagues and follow practice policies and legal
