Summary

Gurdwara Sahib Woolwich requires an experienced and capable Kirtani Jatha of three people, comprising a lead singer and second singer on harmonium and the third person on Tabla. The Jatha will carry out Sikh religious duties at the gurdwara in accordance with Sikh principles and the Sikh code of conduct. They must be Amrit Dhari, of high moral character and social skills and demonstrate excellent Kirtan (vocal and instrumental) skills.

Candidates must have previous experience in similar roles with extensive knowledge of Gurbani, Sikh principles, values and history. They must be fluent in Punjabi, written and verbal and able to communicate with members of the sangat from all age groups and backgrounds. Each of the Jatha must be skilled in and able to demonstrate experience and ability in kirtan, classical ragas and a selection of musical instruments – harmonium and Tabla are basic requirements. Skills with other musical instruments will be an advantage.

The duties are typical of any large gurdwara and will include:

• Perform Kirtan (sing and accompaniment) at regular religious programmes, events and services

• Perform Kirtan at weddings, funerals and live event blessings

• Assist the head granthi in the smooth operation of all programmes, events and services

• Perform daily routine, with care and respect, in relation to Guru Granth Sahib including Parkash and Sukh-Assan

• Prepare and Perform blessing of parshad (sacred food)
