JOB SUMMARY

This job description outlines the main duties and responsibilities of the post; however, it is not exhaustive. Additional duties of a similar level may be required as service needs change.

-The Maintenance Technician will undertake work appropriate to his/her core electrical skills.

-The post holder will have specialist knowledge in emergency lighting, fire alarms, fixed‑wire testing, and lightning protection testing.

-The post holder will also be expected to have gained elements of other building‑services skills to support flexible, multi‑trade working.

-The Technician will work as part of a professional and effective Estates Maintenance team and must demonstrate drive, enthusiasm, self‑motivation, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

-The role requires participation in a 4 on / 4 off shift pattern, working 12‑hour shifts, totalling 38.5 hours per week. Reasonable overtime may be required to meet service demands.

-The primary place of work will be the RVI Hospital, Newcastle; however, the post holder may be required to work at other Trust sites as necessary, with reasonable notice.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The post holder will carry out electrical and associated tasks across any part of the estate, including but not limited to:

-Perform planned preventive maintenance (PPM), servicing, testing, diagnosing, repairing, and calibrating advanced electrical and mechanical installations, plant, and equipment.

-Test emergency lighting systems in accordance with BS EN 5266, and rectify faults identified during testing.

-Participate in weekly fire alarm testing.

-Carry out fixed‑wire testing in compliance with BS EN 7671.

-Test the site's lightning protection systems in accordance with BS EN 62305.

-Respond to breakdown and reactive maintenance requests.

-Carry out electrical isolations for specialist maintenance contractors.

-Work safely and in full compliance with Trust and departmental Health & Safety procedures.

-Assist in maintaining accurate estates records, asset data, and plant history.

-Adapt to new tasks and situations as they arise.

-Share knowledge and support colleagues as required.

-Undertake mandatory and role‑specific training to maintain competency.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

Essential

-Completion of a recognised engineering apprenticeship.

-City & Guilds, BTEC, NVQ Level 3 or equivalent in an electrical engineering discipline.

-IEE 18th Edition Wiring Regulations (BS 7671).

-Minimum of 3 years' post‑apprenticeship experience, preferably within a healthcare or similarly complex environment.

-City & Guilds 2391 (Inspection & Testing) or equivalent.

-City & Guilds qualification in Escape Lighting to BS EN 5266.

Desirable

-Mechanical maintenance experience or multi‑skilled capability across mechanical systems.

-Additional mechanical qualifications (e.g., HVAC, pumps, valves, or building services mechanical training).

The post holder is expected to undertake any necessary training to maintain competence and align with statutory and organisational requirements.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
