Job Summary

The NHS Trust is seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Locum Consultant Rheumatologist to provide high-quality rheumatology services and support delivery of patient-centred care. The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary team and contribute to outpatient clinics, inpatient consultations, multidisciplinary meetings, and clinical governance activities.

This is an excellent opportunity for a consultant with broad rheumatology expertise who can commence duties at short notice.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities

• Provide consultant-led rheumatology outpatient services.

• Assess, diagnose, and manage patients with inflammatory arthritis, connective tissue diseases, vasculitis, osteoporosis, and other rheumatological conditions.

• Deliver advice and consultation for inpatient referrals across the Trust.

• Supervise and support junior medical staff and specialist nurses.

• Participate in multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings.

• Prescribe and monitor disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs) and biologic therapies in accordance with national and local guidelines.

• Ensure timely clinical documentation and communication with GPs and other healthcare professionals.

Governance and Quality

• Participate in clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement activities.

• Maintain accurate patient records in line with Trust policies and GMC standards.

• Report incidents and contribute to risk management processes.

• Support implementation of evidence-based practice and national guidance.

Teaching and Training

• Provide education and supervision for junior doctors, medical students, and allied healthcare professionals.

• Contribute to departmental teaching programmes.

• Participate in appraisal and revalidation requirements where applicable.

Leadership and Team Working

• Work collaboratively with consultants, nursing teams, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals.

• Support service development initiatives within Rheumatology.

• Promote a culture of safety, equality, and continuous improvement.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria

Qualifications

• Full GMC registration with a licence to practise.

• CCT in Rheumatology (or within six months of obtaining CCT) or equivalent specialist qualification.

• Entry on the GMC Specialist Register for Rheumatology, or eligibility for entry.

Experience

• Relevant experience working at Consultant level in Rheumatology.

• Experience managing a broad range of rheumatological disorders.

• Experience supervising junior doctors and multidisciplinary teams.

• Participation in clinical audit and quality improvement.

Knowledge and Skills

• Excellent clinical and diagnostic skills in Rheumatology.

• Effective communication and interpersonal skills.

• Ability to work independently and within a multidisciplinary team.

• Knowledge of NHS governance, clinical standards, and best practice guidelines.

Desirable Criteria

• Higher degree or postgraduate qualification.

• Experience in biologics services.

• Research publications or involvement in clinical research.

• Experience in service development and pathway redesign.

• Educational supervision experience.

• Contract: Locum Consultant

• Start Date: ASAP

• Duration: As agreed with the Trust

• Hours: Full-Time (typically 10 PAs) or Part-Time considered

• On-Call: As per departmental rota requirements

• Salary/Rate: Competitive NHS Consultant Locum rates / Agency rates
