Summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Assistant Psychologist to work in the Newham Early Intervention in Psychosis Service. This role is focused on supporting our work with carers; work which is integral to our service users' recovery journey. We welcome applications from people who have an undergraduate degree in psychology (2:1 or above) andprevious knowledge and/or experience of working with psychosis or severe and enduring mental health problems, ideally within an NHS setting.

This post holder will (under the supervision of a qualified clinical/counselling psychologist), assess the needs of carers, and help to facilitate the delivery of supportive interventions including education and support groups for the carers of NEIS service users. There are also opportunities to support the delivery of family interventions in psychosis requiring attendance of regular clinical supervision and internal training sessions.

The Newham Early Intervention in Psychosis Service works to support clients aged 18-65 who have recently experienced a first-episode of psychosis. If successful, you will work as part of a dedicated MDT based in Canning Town, East London. • assess the needs of carers at the start of service users' journey with the service

• help to facilitate the delivery of supportive interventions including education and support groups for the carers of NEIS service users.

• support the delivery of family interventions in psychosis

• attendance at regular clinical supervision and internal training sessions

• oversee outcome measures pertaining to carer and family interventions

• develop links with local organisations who can support carer wellbeing

The post holder will be an integrated member of the Newham Early Intervention Service, and will provide psychologically-informed assessments and support to the carers of NEIS service users. This work will be under the supervision of a qualified clinical/counselling psychologist based within the team who will retain clinical responsibility for the clinical work carried out.

When a family member experiences a psychotic episode, often the need for carers to absorb and utilise new information regarding psychosis and related services at a time of emotional upheaval can be very challenging. Family members, partnersand friends can feel unsure about the best way to support a loved one. By providing time and space to listen to any concerns, and by providing information and guidance wherever possible, some of the related stressors may be better managed. This then maximises the carer’s supportiveresources, and also improves the recovery experience of the service user.

This post was created to directly address the needs of NEIS carers. The primary task of the role will be: to engage NEIS carers; to encourage them to share their personal journey; to explore their appraisal and emotional response to these events; to assess their support needs; and to provide psychoeducation, offer access to appropriate NEIS groups, and signpost to sources of information and support. This work will very often require the use of interpreters. They will have a foundational understanding of psychosis, carer-focussed support programmes, and psychological theory and research underpinning work with carers.

They will work alongside the qualified psychologists within the team to develop and support the wider MDT’s relationship to these interventions. This may involve providing consultation, teaching and training to the team. They will provide continuity of care by establishing good working relationships with the community services including the wider secondary care psychological service.

The post holder will be required to identify the carers of NEIS clients, and to manage a database of this information. They will also log offers and uptake of interventions. The post holder will carry out service audit, research, and evaluation in line with the service needs, often within the framework of Quality Improvement (QI). The post holder will be an active member of QI initiatives, and will have opportunities to enhance skills in data processing, inputting and analysis; liaising with other members of the QI team; disseminating this work. The post holder will be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office, specifically MS Excel.

The post holder will be supported to learn about psychosis, EI teams, and how evidence-based psychological approaches are utilised in these settings. They will foster an awareness of power and the impact of discrimination and disadvantage in relation to a range of identifiers including but not limited to: gender, race, ethnicity, economic status, sexuality, religion and age.

The role will involve some out of hours (evening) work, in order to facilitate the delivery of our Family & Friends group.
