Who are we looking for?

NICE is looking to appoint a small number of specialist committee members with expertise in health economics to support guideline development. This is a rare opportunity to help shape national guidance, influence decisions across the health and care system, and work alongside leading experts at the heart of health policy.

As a specialist committee member with strong expertise in health economics, you will work in partnership with leading clinicians, academics, people with lived experience, policymakers, and NICE’s in-house guideline development teams, including health economists, to shape national guidance with real-world impact.

This role offers an excellent opportunity to influence care across the health and care system while collaborating with high-performing, multidisciplinary teams.

About the role

Health economics is at the heart of NICE’s guideline programme, helping ensure recommendations are not only clinically effective but also make the best use of finite NHS resource. By comparing different treatment options and considering their wider impact on services, economic evidence supports guideline committees to make balanced, practical decisions. This helps ensure guidance is grounded in real world value, supporting high quality care that is both effective and sustainable across the health and care system.

These new roles will complement NICE’s in-house expertise by bringing additional independent external insight, particularly on topics requiring more complex economic analysis, while strengthening the contribution of economics in committee discussions.

Key responsibilities will include:

• contributing economic expertise at key committee discussions

• reviewing economic modelling and evidence

• helping interpret cost-effectiveness issues for committees

• raising the profile of the economic work within the committee

Remuneration:

Currently the position of committee member is unpaid. However, NICE will pay reasonable out-of-pocket expenses, including train fares and hotel costs, when necessary, for attending committee meetings as set out in NICE’s non-staff reimbursement policy.    

NICE recognises that in some circumstances individuals will need to arrange for carers or support workers to accompany them to a meeting, or to take over unpaid caring responsibilities while they are at a meeting – this includes childcare or care of a family member with a disability or other additional needs. The circumstances in which NICE can provide reimbursement for such costs are outlined in thenon-staff reimbursement policy.              

Time commitment:

Specialist committee members are expected to attend approximately 3-6 day-long committee meetings over a 12 month period. The exact number of meetings will vary by topic. Most committee meetings are held virtually, with a small number taking place in a hybrid or in-person format.

Committee members are required to:

• Participate in NICE guideline induction and development training, as required.

• Contribute economic expertise to committee discussions, strengthening the role of health economics in deliberations and decision making.

• Review economic evidence and modelling.

• Support interpretation of cost effectiveness issues.

• Promote and raise the profile of economic considerations within the committee.

• Support quality assurance of guidelines and recommendations prior to internal NICE approval, including advising on and responding to stakeholder comments on draft recommendations before consultation and final publication.

• Potentially participate in topic group work between committee meetings
